Sixth-Seeded Bulldogs Drop Game to Third-Seeded Presbyterian

LEXINGTON, S.C. – Despite edging out to a 1-0 lead in the first inning, the UNC Asheville baseball team dropped Thursday's 2017 Big South Conference Baseball Championship Presented by Hardee's opening-round game 6-4 to third-seeded Presbyterian at Lexington County Baseball Stadium.
The sixth-seeded Bulldogs (23-31) will now play an elimination game against No. 2 seed Liberty on Friday, May 26, as the Flames were defeated 16-7 by Gardner-Webb in the tournament's first game. First pitch is slated for 9:30 a.m. The winner of that game will go on to play another elimination game against the loser of Game-7 between No. 7 Gardner-Webb and third-seeded Presbyterian (30-17).
Carmine Pagano put the Bulldogs on the board first in the top of the first inning when he scored off a double down the right field line by Justin Woods.
After being held scoreless in the bottom of the frame, PC went on to score single runs in each of the second, third and fourth innings, building up a 3-1 lead heading into the sixth inning.
In the sixth, freshmen Tyler Serricchio and Brandon Lankford drove in a pair of runs to knot the score back up at three-all. Serricchio sent a sacrifice fly to right field, allowing Joe Tietjen to score before Lankford singled through the left side, scoring Woods.
Presbyterian retook the lead in the sixth inning with a solo home run by Nick Guimbarda. Guimbarda then extended the lead out to 6-3 with a two-RBI single through the right side in the bottom of the next inning.
UNC Asheville was able to get a run back in the top of the eighth when Serricchio doubled to left field, scoring Woods, but that was as close as the Bulldogs could manage.
Five different Bulldogs registered a hit in the game, including Tietjen, Woods, Serricchio, Lankford and Andrew Friedholm. Woods scored two runs in the game while Serricchio batted in two.
Tyler Weyenberg led the way for PC in the game with a 3-for-4 outing that included scoring a run and batting one in. Guimbarda went 2-for-4 with three RBIs and a run scored.
Senior Spencer Orr (L, 2-5) pitched the first six innings for UNC Asheville and struck out seven batters while Hayden Deal (W, 4-4) earned the win for PC in seven innings of work that saw him also strike out seven batters.
