Bulldogs Claim 5-3 Win Over App State

05.02.2017 | Baseball

ASHEVILLE, N.C. – Behind multi-hit performances by Carmine Pagano, Danny Wilson and Justin Woods, the UNC Asheville baseball team avenged an earlier season loss to Appalachian State with a 5-3 home victory Tuesday night at Greenwood Field.

The Bulldogs (18-24) scored single runs in the first and second innings before plating two in the sixth and a final insurance run in the eighth to secure the 18th win of the season and third in the last five games.

In the first inning, Woods flew out to center field, but an error on the transfer allowed Wilson to tag up at second, round third and cruise home.

In the next inning, Pagano ripped a single to right-center field to score Tyler Serricchio, setting the score at 2-0.

App State (18-27) bounced back in the top of the fourth and fifth innings with single runs to tie things up, but the Bulldogs would not be denied as Brandon Lankford and Chris Troost both scored in the sixth to put UNC Asheville back on top, this time for good.

Despite another solo run in the top of the seventh, Asheville was able to edge back out to a two-run lead in the bottom of the eighth when Kyle Carruthers doubled to left-center field, scoring Pagano from second.

Pagano went 2-for-3 at the plate with an RBI and a run scored while Wilson went 2-for-4 with a run scored. Wilson was also the Bulldogs' starting pitcher and split time on the mound, as the designated hitter and at first base. Woods went 2-for-5 and split time in left field and on the mound.

App State's Matt Brill ended his night going 2-for-3 with a pair of one-run home runs.

On the mound, after Wilson gave UNC Asheville 3.2 solid innings that saw him strike out six batters, Kole Harris, Greg Gasparro, Blake Brown, Nick Boyles, Woods and Austin Fahr all came on in relief. Gasparro (3-3) earned the win as he pitched one scoreless inning without giving up a hit. Fahr recorded his first save on the year, retiring the last out. The Bulldog pitchers fanned 13 Mountaineers in total.

For App State, Bobby Hampton got the start and pitched the first 4.1 innings before giving way to Matt Schaeffer (1-1), who was saddled with the loss as he gave up two runs, one earned, in two-thirds of an inning.

BULLDOG BITES
STREAKING: Tanner Bush is riding a six-game hitting streak as he went 1-for-3 Tuesday night. In that span, the junior outfielder has gone 8-for-20 (.400) with five runs scored, four runs batted in, four doubles and one stolen base.

A LITTLE BIT OF EVERYTHING: Danny Wilson has played six different positions for the Bulldogs this season. The sophomore has pitched, played in the outfield as well as played first base, shortstop and third base and has served as the team's designated hitter. Tuesday night, he pitched 3.2 innings of two-hit ball, gave up just one run and struck out six batters. At the plate, Wilson recorded a pair of hits and scored a run. After being relieved in the fourth, he logged time as the Bulldogs' designated hitter and first baseman.

UP NEXT
After opening the month of May with a win, the Bulldogs will remain home this weekend for a three-game, Big South Conference series against Radford. The Bulldogs and Highlanders are slated to play a single game on Friday, May 5, at 7 p.m. before continuing the series with a 2 p.m. doubleheader on Saturday, May 6.

QUOTABLES
"Our approach at the plate was very good tonight. We played a clean game defensively and, for the most part, controlled them offensively. Everyone contributed tonight in some way. Also, we saw one of the greatest catches in right field tonight by Kyle Carruthers. Hopefully this gives us some confidence and momentum going into a big weekend series." – Scott Friedholm
