Thrilling Comeback Leads Bulldogs to Big South Quarterfinal Win Over Gardner-Webb

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. -Â The UNC Asheville men's tennis team was on the verge of elimination in the Big South Men's Tennis Conference Championships, but the seventh-seeded Bulldogs mounted a furious comeback from a 3-0 deficit to upset the No. 2 seeded Gardner-Webb Runnin' Bulldogs, 4-3, in the quarterfinals of the tournament on Wednesday, April 19, at the Wake Forest Tennis Complex.
The afternoon began with Gardner-Webb winning the doubles competition to take an early 1-0 lead. The Bulldogs' No. 1 duo of Henry Patten and Josh Swindler rallied to a 7-5 victory over Paul Hogan and Johan Fors to stretch to a 15-match winning streak as a pair. After battling back from a 5-0 deficit on court No. 2, Reid Dillon and Olly Cull fell 6-3, to Maximillian Scholl and Breno Plentz. The Runnin' Bulldogs clinched the doubles point when the No. 3 pairing of Ross Gilbert and Adam Schmidt defeated Majed Yousef and James Massie, 6-4.
Singles play kicked off with Asheville's No. 3 Dillon falling to Schmidt, 6-1, 6-1. The Runnin' Bulldogs extended to a 3-0 lead when No. 4 Cull dropped a 6-2, 6-1, decision to Plentz. Asheville cut into Gardner-Webb's lead when No. 2 Swindler downed Hogan in straight sets, 6-4, 6-2. Court No. 5 saw Massie then top Fors, 7-5, 6-4. No. 1 Patten faced potentially his toughest test of the year, winning a 7-6 (4), 7-6 (5), match, over Scholl to remain undefeated. The No. 6 seeded freshman Andrew Sinai stepped up huge for the Bulldogs when he bested Gilbert, 6-7, 6-2, 6-2, to clinch to match.
BULLDOG BITES
STAYIN' ALIVE: The Bulldogs trailed several times throughout the match, both as a team and individually. Gardner-Webb led 3-0 and it appeared as if they were on their way to advancing, but Asheville came storming back for the 4-3 triumph. Henry Patten was trailing 5-0 in the tiebreak of the second set before winning seven straight points to claim his 19th straight set victory of the season. Andrew Sinai also battled back in his match after dropping the first set to win a thrilling three-setter to seal the match for Asheville.
RESILIENT SWINDLER: Senior Josh Swindler has shown his resiliency and determination this year as seven of his 20 matches have gone a full three sets. Swindler is not only 15-5 on the season in singles play, but 6-1 in matches that have gone the distance. The senior also sits atop the Big South Conference standings at the No. 2 singles slot.
PATTEN MAKES HISTORY: Ranked 118th in NCAA Division I, sophomore Henry Patten has been extremely impressive in his performances this season, earning himself back-to-back Big South Men's Tennis Player of the Week for matches played Jan. 23-29 as well as Feb. 27-March 6. Patten topped the No. 102 ranked singles player at the time, Scott Webster of Appalachian State, earlier this season. Patten also defeated the No. 66 ranked singles player at the time, Eduardo Mena of Tennessee Tech. The Big South Player of the Year is now 20-0.
THE STREAK CONTINUES: The No. 1 duo of Henry Patten and Josh Swindler have had a phenomenal season. After their victory over Gardner-Webb today, the top pairing improved to 19-1 on the year and are currently riding a 15-match winning streak.
UP NEXT: With the victory today, the Bulldogs will go on to face the winner of Match 4, between No. 3 Campbell and No. 6 Radford, Thursday, April 20, at noon.
