HIGH POINT, N.C. – The UNC Asheville women's basketball team made a lot of good plays and seemed poised early in the fourth quarter to make a late run, but High Point was able to make crucial shots down the stretch to claim an 81-70 Big South Conference win inside the Millis Center Saturday afternoon.

Chatori Major had three of her six three-pointers in the second quarter alone as the Bulldogs trailed the Panthers 33-30 after the first half of play. She ended the afternoon with a game-high 27 points.

Despite the Bulldogs (11-10, 5-5 Big South Conference) continuing to show fight and resolve in the second half, the Panthers extended the lead out to 12, 56-44 in the third quarter by out-scoring Asheville 23-14 in the period.

Major and Khaila Webb then scored the first six points of the fourth quarter in under two minutes, forcing High Point (8-13, 6-4 Big South Conference) to call a timeout. A couple of plays later, Webb drew a foul, converted the back end of a pair of free throws and then got a defensive board before scoring a layup in transition to extend the scoring drive to 7-0 in favor of Asheville in the opening three minutes of play.

However, High Point responded with seven straight points, including a three-pointer from Emma Bockrath, to reclaim a 10-point, 63-53 lead before Major drilled a trey from the right corner to slow the Panthers down.

But it was not enough as High Point was able to extend the lead back out to 12, 69-57 with just under two minutes left to play before eventually claiming the 11-point, 81-70 win.

Major led the Bulldogs with a 10-for-14 (71.4 percent) effort from the field and went 6-for-8 (75.0 percent) from long range.  She also had three assists, a block and a steal in 39 minutes of work.

Behind Major, Webb scored 20 points off 7-for-12 shooting (58.3 percent) and KJ Weaver finished with 12 points. Weaver also had two blocks, matching Bronaza Fitzgerald for tops on the team in the category.

High Point was led by Brockrath's 22-point effort and 18 points from Kaylah Keys. Brockrath went 8-for-11 (72.7 percent) from the field.

The Bulldogs shot 47.4 percent (25-51) from the field for the game, including 52.9% (9-for-17) in the fourth quarter. On the other side, High Point ended the game shooting 49 percent (25-for-51) from the field, including 75 percent (9-for-12) in the third quarter alone. The Panthers only managed to shoot 27.3 percent (3-for-11) in the fourth quarter. High point also benefitted from shooting 36 free throws compared to just 19 by the Bulldogs.

BULLDOG BITES
THREE FOR THREE: Senior Chatori Major converted six three-pointers in the game at High Point. It is the second time this season she has scored at least six three-pointers and third time in her career that she has converted at least five.

MAJOR SCORING: Chatori Major led the Bulldogs with 27 points Saturday afternoon. It is the second time this season and seventh time in her career that she has eclipsed the 20-point plateau, including a career-high 31 points earlier this year at Presbyterian College.

20-POINT EFFORT FOR WEBB: With her 20-point effort Saturday at High Point, Khaila Webb has now scored 20 or more points in four games this season. In the two games against the Panthers, Webb has scored 38 total points, including 18 at home earlier this year.

CORRALLING THEM IN: Bronaza Fitzgerald had a team-high 10 rebounds, marking the third time this season she has collected double-digit boards. It is also the sixth time in her career that the junior center has corralled in double-digit rebounds.

CLOSING IN ON 1,000: Senior Chatori Major is quickly closing in on 1,000 career points. After scoring 27 points against the Panthers, she now has 929 career points. Last season, she scored 452 points and currently has 281 points this season.

QUOTABLES
"We knew coming into the matchup today that we needed to guard them in transition. Failing to do so allowed them to score too many easy buckets and proved to be detrimental. The other thing they did well is offensive rebound. We didn't put bodies on them and box out in some crucial moments when it was a possession game, particularly in the third quarter. We did some things well. But overall, we need to improve from this effort and get ready for the next one. We expect more of ourselves and we will give it in our next opportunity." – Brenda Mock Kirkpatrick
