Bulldog Women Fall to Presbyterian College 52-47

02.07.2017 | Women's Basketball

ASHEVILLE, N.C. – The UNC Asheville women's basketball team was able to overcome a nearly 10-point deficit to start the fourth quarter, but the Presbyterian College women found a way to hold on and push through late to claim a 52-47 win in Big South Conference action inside Kimmel Arena.

The two teams were tied 10 times and swapped the lead five times, but Presbyterian (8-14, 6-5 Big South Conference) was able to take the lead for good with 43 seconds left in regulation when Rebecca Walker hit a pair of free throws. Cortney Storey then added one of her own a few seconds later and Kaycie Reffner sealed things up with a pair of free throws with just eight seconds remaining.

UNC Asheville (11-11, 5-6 Big South Conference) was able to edge out to a 4-0 lead through the first two minutes of the first quarter before PC moved ahead for the first time with 3:38 left in the opening period.

Despite the score being tied twice in the second quarter, Asheville was unable to find that little bit extra to push ahead and entered the halftime break trailing 24-22.

Sonora Dengokl opened the second half by hitting a layup to knot the score for the fifth time, but PC found an answer and was able to answer Asheville almost shot-for-shot throughout the second half.

Khaila Webb ended the night with 11 points to lead the Bulldogs in scoring, including hitting all four of her free throw attempts. Under the net, she tied her season-high with nine rebounds, including three offensive, and also added four assists and a steal in 33 minutes of work.

KJ Weaver ended her night with 11 points and seven rebounds in 27 minutes of work. She was an efficient 4-for-5 from the field while Dengokl finished with eight points in 33 minutes of work.

Walker and Taylor Petty led the offensive charge for the Blue Hose with 12 and 11 points, respectively.

As a team, Asheville shot 34.8 percent (16-for-46) from the field, including hitting on four of their nine attempts (44.4 percent) in the third quarter alone. Presbyterian ended the game shooting 38.6 percent (17-for-44) from the field. The Blue Hose shot 45.7 percent (16-for-35) through the first three quarters of the game, but suffered through a 1-for-9 (11.1 percent) stretch during the fourth period.

BULLDOG BITES
A LITTLE BIT OF EVERYTHING: Junior guard Khaila Webb did a little bit of everything, Tuesday night. She led the Bulldogs with 11 points, nine rebounds and four assists and was also a perfect 4-for-4 from the charity stripe and converted her lone three-point attempt.

CLEANING THE OFFENSIVE GLASS: As a team, the Bulldogs collected 19 offensive rebounds and turned those into 17 points. On the flip side, Presbyterian had just five offensive boards and turned those into just three points.

BLOCK PARTY: Tuesday night's two-block effort by senior center KJ Weaver marked the 12th time this season she had swatted away multiple shots. Weaver ended Tuesday's game against Presbyterian with two blocks and now has 145 career blocks.

QUOTABLES
"Credit PC for playing tough on our home court. We turned the ball over too many times and had some execution issues on the defensive end that cost us. One of our goals was to dominate the glass, which we did, but saw little fruit from our second chance opportunities." - Brenda Mock Kirkpatrick
