ASHEVILLE, N.C.—The UNC Asheville men's tennis team fell, 5-2, at the hands of the Appalachian State Mountaineers on Saturday afternoon at the Asheville Racquet Club.

The Bulldogs dropped the doubles point, falling behind, 1-0. The No. 1 pairing of Henry Patten and Josh Swindler fell to the Mountaineers' Scott Webster and Jack Maddocks, 6-2. The Bulldogs' No. 2 Andrew Sinai and James Massie dropped their match to Trey Morris and Fredric Milo Bargeron, 6-4. Asheville took the No. 3 court when Olly Cull and Reid Dillon defeated Alex Brea and Alex Pavkovich, 6-0.

Singles play began with No. 1-seeded Patten defeating Webster in straight sets, 7-5, 6-2. No. 2 Swindler fell in three sets, 3-6, 6-4, 4-6, to Maddocks. The No. 3 court saw Cull lose 6-4, 4-6, 3-6 to Morris. No. 4 seeded Sinai then dropped his match to Bargeron, 7-6, 7-6. The Bulldogs' No. 5 Dillon was defeated by Pavkovich, 6-2, 3-6, 4-6. The afternoon concluded with No. 6 Massie topping Brea, 4-6, 6-2, 1-0 (4).

BULLDOG BITES
PATTEN PEAKING: Sophomore Henry Patten has started the season with some very impressive performances, earning himself the Big South Men's Tennis Player of the Week for matches played Jan. 23-29. The native of the U.K. is now 5-0 in singles play on the year, winning every match in straight sets. Alongside Josh Swindler, the No. 1 doubles pairing is 4-1 on the season.

CLEAN SWEEPS:  Despite today's loss, the Bulldogs pulled off three consecutive 7-0 sweeps to begin the campaign. Asheville now has swept Mount Olive, Lenoir-Rhyne and Mars Hill this season.

UP NEXT: The Bulldogs will continue their homestand against King University on Friday, Feb. 10, at the Asheville Racquet Club at 1 p.m.
