ASHEVILLE, N.C.—The UNC Asheville men's tennis team opened Big South Conference play with a 5-2 triumph over the Radford Highlanders Sunday afternoon at the Asheville Racquet Club.

The Bulldogs started the afternoon off with some solid doubles performances. The No. 1 pairing of Henry Patten and Josh Swindler dropped only one game in their 6-1 triumph over Rodrigo Magalhaes and Robin Calais. The No. 2 seeded Majed Yousef and James Massie then claimed the doubles point with a 6-4 victory over Matko Varga and Janken Thoen. Play on court No. 3 was left unfinished as Asheville had already clinched the point.

Asheville was able to carry the momentum over to singles play, taking the No. 1-4 positions in straight sets. No. 1 Patten improved to 8-0 on the year with a 6-2, 6-2, win over Magalhaes. No. 2 Swindler topped Calais, 6-3, 6-3. The No. 3 court saw Yousef defeat Varga, 6-4, 6-4. No. 4 seeded Cull downed Alexandros Caldwell, 6-4, 6-4. No. 5 Thoen edged Sinai, 7-5, 7-6. Play concluded with Radford's No. 6 Taylor downing Massie, 6-0, 6-4.

BULLDOG BITES
PATTEN CONTINUES UNDEFEATED STREAK: Sophomore Henry Patten has started the season with some very impressive performances, earning himself the Big South Men's Tennis Player of the Week for matches played Jan. 23-29. Patten topped the No. 102 ranked singles player at the time, Scott Webster of Appalachian State, earlier this season. Last weekend, Patten defeated the No. 66 ranked singles player, Eduardo Mena, of Tennessee Tech. The native of the U.K. is now 8-0 in singles play on the year, winning every match in straight sets. Alongside Josh Swindler, the No. 1 doubles pairing is 7-1 on the season.

FRESHMAN FOCUSED: Freshman Edward Colclough has seen some early season success at the No. 6 singles position for the Bulldogs. Colclough is undefeated on the year, holding a 3-0 record. He has topped competition from Lenoir-Rhyne, Mount Olive and King University.

CLEAN SWEEPS: Despite last Saturday's loss to Tennessee Tech, the Bulldogs pulled off yet another 7-0 sweep, against King University. In addition to the win over the Tornado, Asheville has also swept Mount Olive, Lenoir-Rhyne and Mars Hill this season.

UP NEXT: The Bulldogs will travel to Spartanburg, S.C. to face Wofford College on Monday, Feb. 27, beginning at 2 p.m.
