Asheville Baseball Falls 4-1 at Samford Saturday Afternoon

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – The UNC Asheville baseball team suffered a 4-1 setback Saturday afternoon in the second game of a three-game series at Samford.
The visiting Bulldogs tallied five hits in the game, but the home team notched seven to counter one error.
Samford edged out to a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the third inning and added to the lead with another single run in the fifth. In the bottom of the sixth, the home Bulldogs put up a two-spot to lead 4-0, but Asheville didn't just roll over.
The visiting Bulldogs put up a run in the top of the seventh when Kyle Carruthers reached safely on a bases-loaded fielder's choice. In the process, senior Joe Tietjen cruised home and broke up the shutout.
Five different Asheville players recorded a hit in the game, including Carruthers, Brandon Lankford, Tietjen, Chris Troost and Andrew Friedholm.
Redshirt sophomore Ryan Tapp earned the start Saturday afternoon, seeing his first action since the 2015 season as he pitched 5.1 innings and fanned four batters. Tapp was saddled with the loss while Jesse Juday, Joe Zayatz and Justin Woods all saw action on the bump.
Mikhail Cazenave earned the win for Samford, pitching 6.0 innings and striking out seven batters. W. Burns came in for the final inning to record the save.

Asheville and Samford will conclude the three-game series with a 2 p.m. Eastern Standard Time first pitch on Sunday, Feb. 19. Following the game on Sunday, the Asheville Bulldogs will travel to Spartanburg, S.C., for a mid-week game at USC Upstate on Wednesday, Feb. 22.
