Bulldogs Close Out 2017 and Open Big South Conference Schedule With Home Win Over Campbell

ASHEVILLE, N.C. – Five different Bulldogs finished in double figures in UNC Asheville's Big South Conference-opening 85-79 victory over Campbell at Kimmel Arena on Saturday, Dec. 30, 2017.
Campbell (6-7, 1-0 Big South Conference) led by as many as nine at 18-9 in the first half with 13:33 remaining in the opening stanza, but UNC Asheville would go on a 32-15 run over the next just over 11 minutes to lead 41-33.
The Bulldogs would lead 43-40 at the halftime break. UNC Asheville shot a scorching 63.0 percent (17-of-27) in the first half as a team.
UNC Asheville (8-6, 1-0 Big South Conference) would control the opening 14 minutes of the second half with the Bulldogs leading by 11 at 73-62 with 5:58 to play in the game.
The final just under six minutes though showed though just how tough it is to win in league play with Campbell pulling to within two shortly thereafter at 77-75 with 1:57 left in the contest.
Just over a minute later a MaCio Teague layup put the Bulldogs up by four at 79-75. The Teague bucket would prove to set the tone for the final seconds that saw UNC Asheville hold off the Camel advances for the six-point win.
UNC Asheville senior guard Ahmad Thomas flirted with a triple-double in the win over the Camels, ending his efforts with 24 points, seven rebounds and six assists.
Alec Wnuk concluded his day with 15 points, five rebounds, one assist and one steal, while Teague closed out his afternoon with 14 points, three rebounds, three assists and two steals. Wnuk was an impressive 7-of-8 from the field in the Bulldog win.
Kevin Vannatta dished out five assists to go along with 13 points, seven rebounds and one steal. He was 5-of-7 from the field in the UNC Asheville victory.
The final Bulldog in double figures was Raekwon Miller. He had 11 points, five rebounds, three steals and one assist. Miller was a perfect 7-of-7 from the charity stripe.
Four Camels finished in double figures in their loss to the Bulldogs with preseason Big South Player of the Year Chris Clemons leading the way with 25 points.
As a team, UNC Asheville shot an impressive 57.4 percent (31-of-54). UNC Asheville connected on 82.6 percent (19-of-23) of its free throw attempts as a team in its win.
Campbell shot 50.8 percent (30-of-59) as a team in its loss to the Bulldogs.

Thomas is nearing becoming just the second player in league history with over 1,000 points, 600 rebounds, 200 steals and 200 assists. Thomas ended the conference opener against Campbell with 1,289 points, 596 rebounds, 214 steals and 197 assists.
