ASHEVILLE, N.C. – To conclude its final non-conference road game of the 2017-18 season, the UNC Asheville women's basketball team will travel to USC Upstate on Dec. 16 in Spartanburg, S.C. at 2 p.m.
 
The showdown will be the 10th straight season these two teams have squared off, and with Upstate moving to the Big South Conference next season, the rivalry will continue next year but in league play.

The Bulldogs dropped their seventh decision of the season on Sunday, Dec. 10 as Mercer out-muscled UNC Asheville 67-56. The Bears entered the weekend contest ranked 14th in the Colleginsider.com Mid-Major Poll. Despite the 11-point loss, the two squads were knotted at halftime 29-29, but thanks to a 24-point third quarter, the Bears out-scored the Bulldogs by 11 in the second half. Khaila Webb and Ali Trani paced the Bulldogs in scoring as each totaled 13 points and combined for six assists and five rebounds. Bronaza Fitzgerald was the third Bulldog to post double-digits as she totaled 11 points and was two rebounds shy of recording her third straight double-double. Brooke Jordan-Brown had a career day as she blocked three shots in 15 minutes off the bench. As a team, the Bulldogs shot .377 from the field and went 11-for-18 from the charity stripe.
 
In the last three games, the Bulldogs are 1-2, but they have out-scored opponents 224-190 and out-rebounded opponents 132-79 during that stretch. UNC Asheville has also made 13 more field goals, two more three pointers, six more free throws, 31 more offensive rebounds and three more blocks. Three Bulldogs have averaged double-digits in points during the three-game stretch with Webb posting 13.0 ppg, Fitzgerald with 12.7 ppg and Scott recording 10.7 ppg. Fitzgerald is averaging a double-double in the last three games as she has grabbed 32 total rebounds (10.7 rpg).
 
At the Big South Conference Media Day, the Bulldogs were selected to finish fifth, despite receiving the second-highest amount of first-place votes in the league. Radford earned seven of the total first-place votes as the Highlanders were selected the win the league.
 
UNC Asheville opens its conference portion of the schedule on Jan. 2 at Campbell followed by the conference home opener on Jan. 6 at 2 p.m. versus High Point.
 
Scouting USC Upstate
 
USC Upstate enters the weekend contest with a 3-8 overall record and a 3-3 mark inside the Hodges Center. The Spartans are 2-2 in their last four games with wins over Bob Jones and South Carolina State at home.
 
There are four players that are averaging above eight points per game this season with Tamera Thorpe leading the way with 10.6 ppg. Brittney Delva leads the team with 46 assists and 19 steals. Morgan Williams leads the squad with 51 rebounds, while Riley Popplewell tops the team on the offensive boards with 24.
   
As a team, the Spartans shoot .371 percent from the field while allowing opponents to shoot .403 percent. They like to shoot three pointers as they average 7.2 made three pointers a game while shooting .299 percent behind the three-point arc. Upstate forces a lot of turnovers as it averages 11.1 steals a game while opponents average 21.9 turnovers per contest.
 
Prior to the 2017-18 season, USC Upstate was predicted to finish seventh out of eight teams in the ASUN Preseason Coaches and Media Polls.
