UNC Asheville Leads From Start-to-Finish in Huge Non-Conference Home Win Over Monmouth

ASHEVILLE, N.C. – Behind a career day by Kevin Vannatta, the UNC Asheville men's basketball team picked up a big non-conference home win over Monmouth on Wednesday, Nov. 22, at Kimmel Arena.

UNC Asheville led from start-to-finish in the battle of two of the top Mid-Major programs in the country with the Bulldogs currently 27th in the CollegeInsider.com Mid-Major Top-25 and Monmouth 35th. UNC Asheville was ranked 24th in the preseason poll.

The Bulldogs (3-2) started the game on an 8-0 run and ended the first half leading the Hawks, 34-27. The Bulldogs would lead by as many as 14 in the second half before procuring the 11-point win.

Vannatta led the Bulldogs with his career-best 25 points to go along with five rebounds and one assist. He was a perfect 5-of-5 from beyond the arc and 7-of-12 overall from the field.

Ahmad Thomas concluded his evening with a double-double for the Bulldogs with 13 points and 12 rebounds.

Only one Monmouth player finished their efforts in double figures with Austin Tilghman scoring 11.

The Bulldogs finished their win shooting 35.6 percent (21-of-59) as a team. Asheville shot 44.4 percent (8-of-18) from beyond the arc.

Monmouth (2-3) was limited to 32.7 percent (17-of-52) shooting by the Bulldogs and just 29.2 percent (7-of-24) shooting from beyond the arc.

UNC Asheville finished its win over Monmouth owning an 11-2 advantage in fast-break points.

Steals into Buckets
UNC Asheville forced Monmouth into 22 turnovers with the Bulldogs collecting 13 steals overall as a team. The Bulldogs were able to score 18 points off the 22 Monmouth miscues.

Packing the Stat Sheet/Nearing 200 Steals
Ahmad Thomas put together a typical stat stuffer performance against Monmouth with the Bulldog standout collecting the double-double with 13 points and 12 rebounds to go along with five assists, four steals and one block. Thomas now has 1,154 points and 551 rebounds in his career. The 56th player in Big South Conference history to score over 1,000 points and collect over 500 rebounds, Thomas with 199 steals overall in his career is nearing becoming just the sixth player in league history with 1,000 points, 500 rebounds and 200 steals. Thomas' 99 steals last year for the Bulldogs is a program record.

Kevin Vannatta's career-best 25 points came on a career-high five three-pointers made. Vannatta needs just seven points to join UNC Asheville's exclusive 1,000-point club as his 25-point outburst against Monmouth leaves him with 993 career points.

Home Sweet Home
UNC Asheville's win over Monmouth was its 11th straight home win. UNC Asheville is now 70-16 all-time at Kimmel Arena, including 48-10 in Big South Conference contests.

UNC Asheville will next welcome Wofford of the Southern Conference to Kimmel Arena at approximately 4:30 p.m. on Sunday, Nov. 26. The game will be broadcast live regionally by WMYA-TV, My 40, and streamed live on the Big South Network. The contest will also be available on radio on 570 WWNC-ASHEVILLE/1440 WMXF-WAYNESVILLE. The UNC Asheville-Wofford game is also the second game of a men's and women's basketball doubleheader with the Asheville women hosting Middle Tennessee at 2 p.m.
