UNC Asheville Sweeps Winthrop at the Justice Center

10.06.2017 | Women's Volleyball

ASHEVILLE, N.C. – The UNC Asheville volleyball team remained undefeated at home in the 2017 season with an impressive 3-0 (25-23, 25-21, 25-23) win over Winthrop at the Justice Center on Friday, Oct. 6.

The two teams battled back and forth over the course of the first set before the Bulldogs eventually emerged with the 25-23 win.

In the second set it looked as if UNC Asheville (7-9, 3-2 Big South Conference) would easily emerge with the set win with the Bulldogs up by as many as eight at 21-13. The Eagles would battle back into the set and the Bulldogs would be clinging to a 21-20 lead. The Bulldogs would dominate the latter points of the set to take a two-set lead entering set No. 3.

In the third set it would be Winthrop (12-7, 3-2 Big South Conference) that looked like they would take the win with the Eagles up 21-17 late in the set.

UNC Asheville head coach Frederico Santos took a time out after Winthrop took that four-point lead, and it would pay off huge with the Bulldogs rallying to take the next five points and a 22-21 lead. The two teams would be tied at 23-all just a little while later, but UNC Asheville scored the final points in the set to take the win.

Junior outside hitter Cara Guthrie led the Bulldogs in the match with 16 kills and five digs. She also had four service aces.

The UNC Asheville attack was paced by sophomore setters Carter Kennedy and Kailey Hackett, who each ended the match with 16 assists.

Sophomore defensive specialist Sheridan Salisbury led the Bulldogs in digs in the match with nine. She also had two service aces.

Phoebe Wu led the Eagles in their loss to the Bulldogs with 11 kills.

Quotable
"It (the win) was huge. Obviously, Winthrop showed they are a very good team, but we were better tonight. I think tonight we played the points better than in other matches that we lost in five that we played poorly. I think tonight we played beautifully, so that's the change. It's a couple of points different and if our student-athletes keep paying attention to the details we should keep doing well." – Head Coach Frederico Santos
