Bulldogs Battle Back to Take Five-Set League Win at Winthrop

ROCK HILL, S.C. – UNC Asheville volleyball battled back from a 2-1 deficit in the match to secure a 3-2 (25-22, 16-25, 19-25, 26-24, 15-9) road win over Winthrop on Saturday, Oct. 28.
UNC Asheville (11-13, 7-6 Big South Conference) earned a 25-22 win over Winthrop (14-12, 5-7 Big South Conference) in the first set before the Eagles took the next two sets.
The Bulldogs looked to be easily taking set No. 4, but Winthrop battled back into the set after being down 19-11 to Asheville to own a 23-22 lead late in the set.
Asheville would not be deterred though in the set and controlled things the rest of the way to take the 26-24 win to force the fifth set.
It was all Bulldogs in the fifth set with Asheville hitting .478 in the game en route to the 15-9 win in the set that garnered the overall match victory.
Four Bulldogs finished with double-digit kills with Cara Guthrie and Ansley Rooks leading the way with double-doubles. Rooks finished with 15 kills and 14 digs, while Guthrie had 15 kills and 15 digs. Guthrie had four blocks, while Rooks had three.
UNC Asheville's KK Haley just missed on a double-double of her own with 11 kills and eight digs. Ava Venema was the final Bulldog with double-digit kills with 11. Venema also had six blocks.
Madisen Zyburt led UNC Asheville in digs overall with 22.
Kailey Hackett finished with 24 assists to lead the Bulldogs in the category. Carter Kennedy was right behind with 23. Hackett also had two blocks.
Julia Loveday had three blocks in the match.
Marion Vaucher led Winthrop in its loss with 20 kills.

Great Weekends
It was a tremendous weekend statistically as well for the Bulldogs with Cara Guthrie finishing with 41 digs (4.56 digs per set) and 38 kills (4.22 kills per set). Three Bulldogs finished with over 20 kills on the weekend with Ava Venema ending her weekend with 22 kills (2.44 kills per set) and 11 blocks (1.22 blocks per set). Ansley Rooks averaged 2.22 kills (20 kills) and 3.11 digs (28 digs) per set in the two Bulldog wins. Madisen Zyburt averaged 5.44 digs (49 digs) per set.
Regular Season Sweeps
The Bulldogs completed two season league sweeps this weekend. UNC Asheville secured a 3-0 (25-16, 25-15, 25-13) win over Big South Conference foe Charleston Southern on Saturday, Oct. 7, at the Justice Center, in their first meeting of the season. With the win on Friday, Oct. 27, the Bulldogs garnered the season sweep of Charleston Southern. UNC Asheville collected a 3-0 (25-23, 25-21, 25-23) win over Winthrop at the Justice Center on Friday, Oct. 6, in their first meeting of the season. The win on Saturday, Oct. 28, allowed UNC Asheville to take both regular season meetings with Winthrop.
In the Standings
The weekend road sweep of Charleston Southern and Winthrop put the Bulldogs in a great spot in the Big South standings with three regular season matches remaining.
