CARY, N.C. – Henry Patten's championship win at the USTA/ITA Carolina ITA Regional just minutes after the conclusion of the event had him thinking back to how much has changed since his arrival at UNC Asheville.
His first year as a Bulldog in the regional he made a run to the round of 32, defeating opponents from Wofford and North Carolina. Last year, he unexpectedly fell in the first round.
And now as a junior, he is the best in the Carolinas.
"It shows a lot of the hard work is worth it and the progression is really nice," Patten mused. "I just want to thank Coach Tom Hand as he has been a big part of that progression. I also want to thank my teammates and my family for keeping up in England. It was a really long weekend of tennis and their support really helped."
Truly a program guy, Patten knows that his win is not only big for him, but also for UNC Asheville tennis.
"I think that this is going to show the whole team is playing at a really high level," Patten said. "I practice with those guys every day and I am able to compete at a very high level. It shows the margin is so small between UNC Asheville and others."
In the finals, the regionally eighth-seeded Patten bested 15th-seeded Alex Favrot of Clemson, 6-3, 6-1. Favrot played mainly at No. 1 singles last year for the Tigers, ending the regular season 16-9. He is currently ranked 107th in the country, and was ranked as high as 90th last season.
The regionally eighth-seeded Patten advanced to the ITA Carolina Regional final by besting 25th-seeded Simon Baudry of Clemson in the semifinals, 6-4, 6-2.
In winning the title at the ITA Carolina Regional, Patten bested players from Elon, NC State, UNCW, Coastal Carolina and Clemson.
The ITA Carolina Regional originally began with 128 competitors in action on Friday, Oct. 13.Â
The singles and doubles winners from each of the 12 USTA/ITA regions will now advance to the 2017 Oracle ITA National Fall Championships, held Nov. 1-5, at the JW Marriott Desert Springs Resort & Spa in Palm Desert, Calif., and the Indian Wells Tennis Garden in Indian Wells, Calif.
Patten was ranked as high as 118th nationally last season. He finished the regular season a perfect 19-0 at No. 1 singles en route to earning Big South Men's Tennis Player of the Year honors.
The ITA Carolina Regional championship is the second title of the fall for Patten.
Earlier this fall in the oldest fall college tennis tournament in the nation it was Patten that was declared champion.
Patten was actually declared co-champion in the event along with Tim Sandkaulen of Ole Miss. The two were supposed to meet up in the final, but due to the forecasted weather in the area from Hurricane Irma it was decided to declare co-champions.
In being declared co-champion at the prestigious event, Patten bested the second, fifth, 14th and 15th seeds at the Southern Intercollegiate.
Patten advanced to the finals of the Southern Intercollegiate Division I draw against Sandkaulen by downing second-seeded Emil Reinberg of Georgia 6-7 (4), 7-6 (2), 6-4.
Reinberg finished the 2016-17 season for Georgia as the 51st-ranked player in the country in the final ITA Division I rankings of the season. He is ranked 30th nationally in the preseason rankings.
Patten closed out his impressive 2017 spring season with a top-15 regional ranking in the Carolina Region Rankings administered by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association.
Patten was ranked 14th in the final Oracle/ITA Division I Rankings – Carolina of the 2017 season.
