Bulldog Women Fall 61-55 to Campbell in Big South Opener
01.03.2017 | Women's Basketball
ASHEVILLE, N.C. – KJ Weaver corralled in a season-high 18 rebounds, seven off the offensive glass, and finished with a double-double with 14 points to go along with a block and a steal, but it was not enough as the UNC Asheville women's basketball team fell 61-55 to Campbell in the Big South Conference opener for both teams inside Kimmel Arena Tuesday night.
The Bulldogs (6-6, 0-1 Big South Conference) bounced back after a slow first quarter, shooting 45 percent (18-40) through the final three periods, including 45.5 percent (5-11) in the third. The third quarter also proved to be the difference maker for the Camels (9-3, 1-0 Big South Conference) as they hit on eight of their 15 attempts from the field (53.3%).
Asheville opened by scoring the first four points of the contest, including a Khaila Webb layup that came off a Campbell turnover just 29 seconds into the game. The Camels then went on a 9-0 run over the next 4:43 to take a five-point lead, but Weaver tied the game at nine-all with 1:33 left in the first quarter before Summer Price hit a trey seconds later to give the Camels the lead for good.
The second quarter saw Campbell open up the distance, stretching the lead out to as many as nine points (13-22) with 5:29 to go in the opening half, but the Bulldogs fought and clawed their way back to within three twice in the remaining 2:30. Jessica Wall hit a trey to set the score at 19-22 and Webb knocked down both of her free throw attempts with 1:31 left in the half before Campbell stretched the lead back out to seven when Hayley Barber knocked down a jumper with six seconds left.
The Camels flirted with a double-digit lead for much of the third quarter, but the Bulldogs showed resolve as they closed the distance in the fourth, pulling to within five points twice. Weaver converted an old-fashioned three-point play with 2:31 to go in regulation, giving Asheville new life and Webb hit a jumper just outside the paint with 50 seconds remaining. But that was as close as the Bulldogs could manage as the Camels closed the game by hitting three of their final four free throw attempts in the closing seconds.
Weaver and Webb combined for 32 of the Bulldogs' 55 points and hit on 50 percent (11-22) of their attempts from the field. The duo also hit on 90.9 percent (10-11) of their free throw attempts to lead Asheville in scoring.
Campbell was led in scoring by Makala Rouse's 16 points and Brianna Cribb's double-double, including 12 points and 10 boards.
BULLDOG BITES
STRONG OFF THE GLASS – Tuesday night was the seventh time this season that K.J. Weaver has led the Bulldogs in rebounding. The senior center corralled in a season-high 18 boards, including seven off the offensive glass. The seven offensive boards was one off her season-high of eight set against Harvard.
LEADING THE WAY – Khaila Webb has now led the team in scoring in four games after tallying 18 points Tuesday night against Campbell.
PERFECTION FROM THE STRIPE – Webb was a perfect 6-for-6 from the free throw line to lead the Bulldogs at the charity stripe.
QUOTABLES
"We have to credit Campbell for coming in with a good game plan and playing the tough defense that they displayed during our non-conference schedule. They played hard and executed well and out-rebounded us on our home court. It appeared at times that they also had a greater purpose in them than we did. Our goal is to be the pursuer, that is what we want every game. Tonight we played like we were running from something and towards nothing. Our team and staff is aware of that and everyone is examining themselves in order to make the adjustments in mentality and execution that are needed to get the results this team is capable of. I have always said, this is a process and this year is no different than the last. Our commitment to that process isn't just required when things are going well. We are just at the beginning of it, and adversity refines if you have the correct response. And we will." - Brenda Mock Kirkpatrick
