GREENVILLE, N.C.—The UNC Asheville men's tennis team dropped their first match of the season to the undefeated East Carolina Pirates, 5-2, on Sunday afternoon at the East Carolina Indoor Tennis Facility.
The Bulldogs fell behind early, dropping the doubles point. Doubles play began with the No. 1 pairing of Henry Patten and Josh Swindler downing the Pirates' Freddie McGeehan and Kasey Countee, 6-4. The Bulldogs' No. 2 Andrew Sinai and James Massie fell to Vlad Anghel and Fredric Lehfeldt, 6-2. Asheville battled tough in the decisive doubles match on court No. 3, but Olly Cull and Reid Dillon fell short, 7-5, to Will Bissett and Ronny Georgi.

Singles play began with No. 1 Patten defeating McGeehan in straight sets, 6-4, 6-3. No. 2 Swindler followed with a thrilling 6-7 (7), 6-2, 6-2 comeback victory over Georgi. ECU began to show their experience taking courts three through six in straight sets. No. 3 court Sinai fell to Anghel, 6-2, 6-2. No. 4 seeded Cull then dropped his match to Lehfeldt, 6-3, 6-2. The Bulldogs' No. 5 Dillon lost a hard fought 6-4, 7-5 match to Countee. The afternoon concluded with Massie falling to Bissett, 6-2, 6-4.
BULLDOG BITES
TOP DOGS: The pairing of sophomore, Henry Patten, and senior Josh Swindler have gotten off to an excellent start to the season. No. 1 Patten and No. 2 Swindler have yet to drop a set all season in both doubles and singles play.

CLEAN SWEEPS: Despite today's loss, the Bulldogs pulled off three consecutive 7-0 sweeps to begin the season. In addition to yesterday's triumph over Mount Olive, they swept Lenoir-Rhyne and Mars Hill last weekend.
UP NEXT: The Bulldogs will begin their five-match homestand when they host Appalachian State next Saturday, Feb. 4, beginning at 3 p.m. at the Asheville Racquet Club.
