Bulldog Women Fall 64-62 to Radford in Overtime Thriller

01.28.2017 | Women's Basketball

ASHEVILLE, N.C. – The UNC Asheville women's basketball team fought valiantly all game and almost pulled off an upset Saturday afternoon, but Radford was able to hold on in the final seconds of overtime to claim a 64-62 Big South Conference win inside Kimmel Arena.

For much of the second half, the Highlanders (15-4, 7-1 Big South Conference) were able to hold on to a four to six point lead, but in the final 3:30 of the fourth quarter, the Bulldogs (10-9, 4-4 Big South Conference) chipped away at that lead thanks to eight points, six in the paint, from senior KJ Weaver and a crucial block with five seconds left in regulation. The blocked shot by Weaver, which was the third of the afternoon for Weaver, gave the Bulldogs new life and sent the game into overtime in front of a raucous crowd.

Weaver then opened overtime by hitting two free throws to give the Bulldogs a two-point, 59-57 lead. However, the Highlanders closed out the game on a 7-2 run to seal the win and remain in a tie for first place atop the conference standings with Campbell.

Asheville started the game off red-hot, streaking out to a 7-2 lead in the first three minutes of the first quarter before Radford was able to find some offense. After the first period, the two teams were tied 17-17 and were both shooting over 50 percent from the field. Asheville hit on 58.3 percent (7-for-12) of their looks in the opening quarter while Radford converted 53.8 percent (7-for-13) of their field goal attempts.

The second quarter belonged to the Highlanders as they out-scored the Bulldogs 16-7 in part due to a 7-for-11 (.636) shooting effort.

Chatori Major led a trio of Bulldogs in double-digit scoring with 17 points. The senior guard hit on 7 of her 17 field goals (41.2 percent), including three three-pointers, giving her 10 in the last two games. She also had a game-high five assists to go along with three steals and a blocked shot.

Weaver ended the game with 13 points after shooting very efficiently from the field. She converted five of her seven attempts (71.4 percent) and just missed out on a double-double with eight rebounds while swatting away three shots. Guard Jessica Wall was the final Bulldog in double figures with 11 points, including converting three three-pointers.

Radford's Destinee Walker led all scorers with 20 points to go along with three blocks, three assists and five rebounds. She hit on eight of her 16 field goal attempts and went 3-for-4 (75 percent) from the free throw line.

Asheville ended the game shooting 41.0 percent (25-for-61) from the field while the Highlanders were slightly more efficient, hitting on 49.1 percent (28-for-57) of their attempts from the field.

BULLDOG BITES
THREE FOR THREE: Senior guard Chatori Major has converted 10 three-pointers over the last two games. She tied the program record with seven treys on Tuesday at Presbyterian College before netting three more on Saturday against Radford.

BLOCK PARTY: Saturday afternoon was the third time this season that KJ Weaver has recorded at least three blocks. She has had multiple blocks in 10 games this season, including a season-high five earlier this season against Tennessee Tech. She currently has 139 blocks for her career, a mark that has her in the top-five of program history.

MOVING ON UP: Senior KJ Weaver finished Saturday's game with eight rebounds, giving her 630 over her illustrious career. That mark has her sixth in Asheville's NCAA Division I era and eighth all-time in rebounds.

QUOTABLES
"Today, both teams played great basketball. Perhaps both teams were not perfect for the entire 45 minutes, but we definitely had brilliant moments. I thought we gave them some easier looks in the second half when we were making our run towards the end and in the overtime period. But our rebounding was outstanding. These kids are playing hard and with heart and we will work on the areas that we need to improve upon to continue to grow and maintain this upward trend." – Brenda Mock Kirkpatrick
