01.24.2017 | Women's Basketball
CLINTON, S.C. – Reigning Big South Conference Player of the Year Chatori Major had a career game Tuesday night to lead the UNC Asheville women's basketball team to a 67-60 road win over Presbyterian College in Big South Conference action inside the Templeton Center.
Major tied a program record with seven three-pointers in the game and became the first UNC Asheville player to score at least 30 points in a game since Shonese Jones accomplished the feat twice during the 2011-12 season. Major scored 31 points, a career-high for the senior from Camp Lejune, N.C., and was lethal from three-point range, hitting 70 percent of her attempts from long range. She was also perfect (6-for-6) from the free throw line.
Major scored 19 of her 31 points and five of her seven three-pointers in the first half alone. Asheville (10-8, 4-3 Big South Conference) was able to withstand a late charge by the Blue Hose (6-12, 4-3 Big South Conference) in the second quarter to take a 35-30 lead into the locker room at halftime.
The Bulldogs and Blue Hose continued to battle close throughout the second half. Every time it seemed like Asheville was getting ready to pull away, PC was able to close the gap and the Asheville advantage was just two, 45-43 heading to the fourth quarter.
In the final period, Presbyterian was able to take a brief lead near the beginning of the stanza, but the Bulldogs would not be denied on offense and stepped up big on defense down the stretch. At one point late in the fourth quarter, UNC Asheville's defense held PC scoreless for over 6 minutes while the offense produced some breathing room down the stretch.
Both teams were efficient from the field with Asheville edging PC by hitting 48 percent (21-for-44) of its attempts compared to 45 percent (22-of-49) by the Blue Hose. The Bulldogs connected on 67 percent (8-for-12) of their three-point attempts and capitalized on 17 of their 21 trips to the free throw line (81 percent). Presbyterian converted just six of their 18 three-point attempts (33 percent) for the game.
Behind Major, fellow senior KJ Weaver scored 12 points off an efficient 4-for-5 (80 percent) outing from the field. Weaver finished the night with four rebounds and went 4-for-6 (66.7 percent) from the charity stripe. Sophomore Sonora Dengokl chipped in eight points and tied Ali Trani for tops on the squad with five rebounds in the contest.
Presbyterian was led by Janie Miles' 14 points and Salina Virola's 13.
BULLDOG BITES
THREE FOR THREE: Senior guard Chatori Major tied the program single-game record Tuesday night with seven three-pointers against Presbyterian. The Camp Lejune, N.C., native was lethal from beyond the arc as she connected on 70 percent (7-of-10) of her attempts. She ties a mark set originally by Grace Blaylock on Jan. 14, 2012, at Winthrop. Shonese Jones also hit seven treys on Feb. 17, 2015 at High Point.
MAJOR SCORING: Reigning Big South Conference Player of the Year Chatori Major had a career night against the Blue Hose, scoring 31 points off 9-for-19 shooting. Tuesday night marked the first time since the 2011-12 season that a Bulldog women's basketball player has scored at least 30 points in a single game. That year, Shonese Jones accomplished the feat twice. On Dec. 19, 2011 she scored 30 against SC State and on Jan. 30, 2012, she scored 30 against Radford.
MAKING THEM COUNT: Chatori Major wasn't just efficient from the field, Tuesday night. The senior guard converted all six of her free throw attempts against the Blue Hose. It is the fifth time this season she has been perfect at the charity stripe and it is the second time this season she has converted six free throws.
SATURDAY'S FITTING TRIBUTE: Saturday afternoon, the Asheville women's basketball program will welcome back over 30 alumni, including 12 members of the 2006-07 Big South Conference Tournament Championship squad. It will be fitting that Saturday's game will be against Radford as that was the team the 2006-07 Bulldogs defeated to claim the program's first-ever Big South Tournament crown 10 years ago.
QUOTABLES
"Our heart and effort were the story of tonight's game at PC. They are an extremely tough team to play against because they make you defend for 25 seconds on every one of their offensive possessions and they are stingy on the defensive end. Our girls were focused on getting to the glass on both ends and trying to play good defense without fouling. Chatori Major is leading with so much heart and confidence. It's absolutely fun to watch! I am excited for the team that the effort was rewarded with a win. But we are just going to continue to focus on playing as a team, having fun and working with intensity with every opportunity. As long as we do those things, I can be satisfied with any outcome. " – Brenda Mock Kirkpatrick

The Bulldogs will play their next two games within the friendly confines of Kimmel Arena. Asheville will first welcome Radford to Asheville on Saturday, Jan. 28, for a women's and men's doubleheader. The men will get things started with a nationally-televised game on the American Sports Network (ASN) at 12 p.m. with the women to follow shortly after at approximately 2 p.m. The Bulldogs will then host Charleston Southern to close out the month of January on Tuesday, Jan. 31.
