Bulldogs Move to 2-0 on the Season With Decisive Win Over Lenoir-Rhyne

ASHEVILLE, N.C.—The UNC Asheville men's tennis team executed yet another 7-0 sweep this weekend, in their victory over Lenoir-Rhyne on Sunday, Jan. 22.
Asheville grabbed the early 1-0 lead, seizing the doubles point, when No. 3 Olly Cull and Reid Dillon downed the Bears' Alex Crespo and Tales Miranda, 6-2. The No. 1 Bulldog pairing of Henry Patten and Josh Swindler defeated Lenoir-Rhyne's Shane O'Dea and Tomas Hons, 6-1. Court No. 2 saw Asheville's Andrew Sinai and James Massie fall to Hamed Gandouz and Paul Lenz, 6-4.

Singles play followed beginning with No. 1 Patten topping Gandouz 6-2, 6-3. On court No. 2, Swindler bested Hons 6-4, 6-1. The No. 3 court saw Cull enter a first set tiebreak, but come out victorious, 7-6 (2), 6-3 over O'Dea. No. 4 Sinai Ayguavives. No. 5 Dillon then beat Crespo 6-2, 6-2. Play concluded with No. 6 Colclough downing Miranda 6-4, 6-3.
BULLDOG BITES
CLEAN SWEEP: The Bulldogs were able to not drop one set throughout entire singles play. They are now perfect in singles competition, as was the case yesterday against Mars Hill.

PRESEASON PICKS: Asheville was picked sixth overall in the 2017 Big South Conference Men's Tennis Preseason Poll. The Bulldogs finished the 2016 regular season with an overall 11-8 record and eventually fell to the No. 2 seed Liberty Flames in the semifinals of the Big South Conference Tournament.
YOUNG FACES: Coming into the 2017 season, Asheville's roster is filled with underclassmen. The Bulldogs have three freshmen in Edward Colclough, Massie and Yousef. The roster also features three sophomores in Cull, Patten, and Sinai. The team will look to the experience of the two seniors, Dillon and Swindler, to provide leadership this season.
UP NEXT: The Bulldogs will hit the road next Saturday, Jan. 28, to face off with Mount Olive at East Carolina's campus in Greenville, N.C. The match begins at 1 p.m. The Bulldogs will then take on the homestanding ECU Pirates at 11 a.m. on Sunday, Jan. 29.
