Bulldogs Collect Dominating Win Over Mars Hill in Season Opener

ASHEVILLE, N.C.—The UNC Asheville men's tennis squad opened up its 2017 season with a 7-0 shutout win over Mars Hill Saturday afternoon at the Asheville Racquet Club.
Asheville grabbed the early 1-0 lead, sweeping doubles play. Competition began with doubles play on court No. 1 where Henry Patten and Josh Swindler downed Tito Ortiz and Ben Reid, 6-1. The No. 2 pairing of James Massie and Majed Yousef also defeated Pedro Pinassi and Fernando Neto, 6-1. In the final doubles match at the No. 3 pairing, Reid Dillon and Olly Cull topped Blake Covington and Carlos Riesco, 6-1.
The Bulldogs carried their dominance over to singles play as well. Not one set was dropped along the way as the Bulldogs swept the singles competition 6-0. No. 1 Patten cruised past Ortiz, 6-2, 6-2. No. 2 Swindler only dropped one game in his 6-1, 6-0 victory. On singles court No 3, Andrew Sinai edged past Reid, 7-6 (1), 6-4. No. 4 Cull was triumphant over Pinassi 6-1, 6-0. On court No 5. Massie bested Neto 6-1, 6-0. The Bulldogs' No. 6 player Yousef finished off the afternoon and the match with a 6-0, 6-2 victory over Covington.

PRESEASON PICKS: Asheville was picked sixth overall in the 2017 Big South Conference Men's Tennis Preseason Poll. The Bulldogs finished the 2016 regular season with an overall 11-8 record and eventually fell to the No. 2 seed Liberty Flames in the semifinals of the Big South Conference Tournament.
YOUNG FACES: Coming into the 2017 season, Asheville's roster is filled with underclassmen. The Bulldogs have three freshmen in Edward Colclough, Massie and Yousef. The roster also features three sophomores in Cull, Patten, and Sinai. The team will look to the experience of the two seniors, Dillon and Swindler, to provide leadership this season.
UP NEXT: Asheville will return to action tomorrow to host Lenoir-Rhyne at the Asheville Racquet Club, beginning at 3 p.m. Following play on Sunday, the Bulldogs will hit the road next Saturday, Jan. 28, to face off with Mount Olive at East Carolina's campus in Greenville, N.C. The match begins at 1 p.m. The Bulldogs will then take on the homestanding ECU Pirates at 11 a.m. on Sunday, Jan. 29.
