Second-Half Rally Against High Point Falls Short for Women’s Basketball

ASHEVILLE, N.C. – A strong second-half effort by the UNC Asheville women's basketball team was not enough Saturday afternoon as High Point netted a 76-60 victory over the Bulldogs in Big South Conference action inside Kimmel Arena.
The Bulldogs got off to a slow start, hitting just three field goals in the first quarter, but business picked up from there. Asheville steadily got better as the game progressed, but High Point shot 50 percent (28-56) from the field for the game, including 64.3 percent (9-14) in the second quarter.
Despite being down 36-22 after the first half, Asheville came out firing in the third quarter behind four quick points by Sonora Dengokl that forced High Point to call a quick timeout to regroup. Over the next four minutes, Asheville attempted to close the gap, but High Point was able to match the Bulldogs point-for-point, eventually pulling away down the stretch.
Khaila Webb led all scorers with 18 points, including 10 in the second half, off a 6-for-11 (.545) shooting effort from the field. The junior guard from Spartanburg, S.C., was also perfect from the free throw line (5-for-5) and recorded a team-high four assists.
Seniors KJ Weaver and Chatori Major both finished the contest in double-digit scoring figures. Weaver, who was strong down low on both ends of the court with three offensive boards and two blocked shots, shot 4-for-6 (.667) from the field and 5-for-6 (.833) from the charity stripe en route to scoring 13 points while Major matched her season-high of four three-pointers for 12 points in 30 minutes of work. Dengokl rounded out the double-digit scoring for Asheville with 10 points as she hit four of her seven attempts from the field (.571) and converted both of her free throw attempts.
As a team, Asheville ended the game shooting 40.4 percent (21-52) from the field, but the Bulldogs hit six of their 10 attempts (60 percent) in the fourth quarter and converted 43.8 percent (7-for-16) of their shots in the third. The Bulldogs were also near perfect at the charity stripe, hitting 12 of their 13 attempts (92.3 percent).
High Point was led by Camryn Brown's 16 points off the bench, including a 10-for-10 effort at the free throw line. Behind Brown, Emma Bockrath finished the game with 14 points and Kaylah Keys added 13.
BULLDOG BITES
MAKING THEM COUNT: Junior guard Khaila Webb was once again perfect at the free throw line Saturday as she hit all five of her free throw attempts. In the Bulldogs' last four games, including Saturday, Webb has missed just one free throw, going 17-18 (.944). She was also perfect against Campbell (6-6) and Longwood (5-5).
THREE FOR THREE: Senior guard Chatori Major matched her season-high for three-pointers in a game, Saturday afternoon. She also had four treys in the Bulldogs' road game at Longwood. She has hit at least three treys in five games this season.
WEAVER DOWN LOW: Senior center KJ Weaver continued her stellar senior season Saturday as she netted 13 points off a 4-for-6 (.667) shooting effort from the field and went 5-for-6 (.833) at the charity stripe. Weaver, who is in the top-10 in school history for rebounds and blocks, corralled in five boards, three off the offensive glass, and swatted away two shots, bringing her career totals to 604 rebounds and 132 blocks.
