Cullowhee, N.C. - The UNC Asheville women's soccer team will look for its second consecutive win when it takes on Western Carolina University at 7 p.m. on the road Friday.
At A Glance – Western Carolina
The Catamounts of Western Carolina will enter Friday's matchup with a 1-1 record. They lost 5-1 to UNC Charlotte to open their regular season before bouncing back with a 3-1 win over Winthrop University on Aug. 21.
Western Carolina was picked to finish sixth in the Southern Conference preseason poll. They return sophomore Sayres McKenna, who made the Southern Conference's All-Freshmen team last year and led the team in assists with seven. She picked up her first assist of this year against Winthrop. The team also returns its top goal scorer in redshirt junior Kasey Cook, who found the net five times while adding three assists last year. Senior Haven Leland scored her team's lone goal in the loss to UNC Charlotte and had an assist in the win over Winthrop.
The Catamounts are led by seventh year head coach Chad Miller.
QUOTABLES
“Western Carolina will be another good non-conference opponent for us to measure ourselves. They are very athletic and highly competitive in transitional moments. Those critical moments in soccer are where we need to remain focused with high communication to stay organized. They will replicate what we will see in some Big South play, so tomorrow is another opportunity for us to get out there and compete and put two halves of soccer together.” – UNC Asheville head women's soccer coach Michelle Demko
NOTABLES
- This will be the fourth consecutive home opener UNC Asheville has now participated in – their own, The Citadel's, Wofford's and now Western Carolina's.
