Arden, N.C.- The Cliffs at Walnut Cove will host the 2016 BAA Scholarship Golf Classic as the first UNC Asheville athletics event of the year on August 22 and 23 before the women's golf team claims The Cliffs as their home course for their inaugural 2016 season.
The Walnut Cove course was recognized by the PGA Tour as “The only championship golf course to debut in tournament-ready condition.”
The tournament's new location is spreading excitement beyond this years' golfers.
"The 2016 BAA Scholarship Golf Classic is shaping up to be our biggest golf event ever. The two-day event at Walnut Cove is expected to host more than 200 golfers and raise over $125,000 for UNC Asheville Student-Athlete Scholarships”, said Bruce Goforth, Bulldog Athletic Association Board Member. “I want to thank all the committee members as well as the citizens of Asheville who have supported the event this year, and in past years. It's going to be the best yet."
The 4,646 - 7,270 yard course at Walnut Cove is a par-71 designed by professional golfer, Jack Nicklaus. Golfers will enjoy a round of golf at Walnut Cove, green and cart fees with lunch and beverages provided. Prizes include three winners in each flight, two hole-in-one contests, four closest to the holes contests and two straightest drive contests.
Following the Annual Scholarship Classic, the six-member women's golf signing class, led by head coach Breanne Hall, will call the Walnut Cove course home as they prepare to make Asheville history.
"I am so thankful to the Cliffs Communities for allowing the UNC Asheville women's golf program the opportunity to call Walnut Cove its home course. The practice facilities are first class and will provide our team the opportunity to improve in all aspects of the game,” said Hall. “The immaculate golf course offers a challenging layout that will certainly prepare players for tournament play. In addition, these young women will have the chance to share facilities with Walnut Cove members who will support their efforts on and off the course, providing a home away from home atmosphere. The unique privilege of practicing at Walnut Cove truly sets UNC Asheville golf apart from other programs."
