BRONX, N.Y. – Three Bulldogs finished in double figures in UNC Asheville's 55-42 loss to host Fordham in the consolation game of the 10th Annual Fordham Holiday Classic on Friday, Dec. 30, at the Rose Hill Gym.
The Bulldogs collected the first points of the game on a Tianna Knuckles three-pointer. Asheville followed that up over the next few minutes by leading 7-6 with just over five minutes left to play in the opening quarter.
Fordham (10-5) would shortly thereafter take a two-point lead at 9-7 before closing out the first quarter with a 17-9 advantage. The Rams would lead the Bulldogs, 31-16, at the halftime break.
Asheville (6-5) would come out of the halftime break strongly with a 6-0 run to commence the half cutting the Ram lead to 31-22 with 6:43 left in the third quarter. The third quarter would close with Asheville still trailing by those same nine points at 42-33.
The Rams in the final quarter of action would outscore the Bulldogs, 13-9, to pick up the 13-point win.
Knuckles and Khaila Webb led the Bulldogs with 11 points each. Chatori Major was the final Bulldog in double figures with 10 points.
Lauren Holden led Fordham in its win with 14 points. G'mrice Davis acquired a double-double for the Rams in the contest with 14 rebounds and 10 points.
As a team, Asheville closed out the contest shooting 35.2 percent (19-of-54). Fordham shot 44 percent (22-of-50) as a team in its win.
BULLDOG BITES
THIRD TIME IS A CHARM: Buoyed by a 6-0 run to start the quarter the Bulldogs outscored Fordham, 17-11, in the third quarter. The Bulldogs shot 57.1 percent (8-of-14) as a team in the third quarter.
A LITTLE BIT OF EVERYTHING: KJ Weaver ended the Bulldog loss with six points, six rebounds and three steals.
QUOTABLES
"I was especially proud of our defensive effort today for the better part of the game. We showed the toughness that I know this team is capable of grinding out possessions and holding Fordham to 55 points on their home floor. Our non-conference schedule was tough by design to prepare us for what we will see in the Big South starting Tuesday. These two games were played very intensely and tested us. We know some areas we need to grow and we will be accountable for those going forward." – Brenda Mock Kirkpatrick
