12.29.2016 | Women's Basketball
BRONX, N.Y. – UNC Asheville battled until the very end against ESPNW Mid-Major ninth-ranked Harvard, but it would be the Crimson who would pick up a 79-62 win over the Bulldogs at the 10th Annual Fordham Holiday Classic at Rose Hill Gym.
The opening few minutes of the game would belong to the Bulldogs with Asheville leading 9-6 with 5:24 to play in the inaugural quarter of action. Harvard would go on to take a narrow 12-11 lead over the Bulldogs at the conclusion of the first quarter.
In the second quarter it would be Harvard that would outscore the Bulldogs, 25-16, in the quarter to take a 37-27 lead into intermission.
The Bulldogs would continue to keep pace with Harvard in the third quarter with the Bulldogs down just eight at 46-38 with 3:48 to play in the quarter after a Tianna Knuckles three-pointer. Harvard from there would close the quarter on a 13-3 run to take a 59-41 lead into the fourth and final quarter. The run would prove to be too much for the Bulldogs to overcome in the fourth quarter.
The Bulldogs finished the game shooting 30.8 percent (20-of-65) as a team. Harvard ended its afternoon shooting 50.8 percent (32-of-63) as a team.
Three Bulldogs concluded their efforts in double figures with Knuckles leading the way with 16 points, four rebounds and three steals. Chatori Major added 12 points of her own.
KJ Weaver finished her day with a double-double with 13 rebounds and 11 points.
Harvard had four players in double figures in the contest with Katie Benzan leading the way with 16 points. Jeannie Boehm had a double-double for the Crimson with 14 points and 10 rebounds.
BULLDOG BITES
HITTING THE OFFENSIVE GLASS: In picking up her double-double with the 13 rebounds and 11 points, Weaver procured eight of her 13 boards on the offensive glass. As a team, Asheville collected 22 offensive rebounds.
PLAYING HARD UNTIL THE END: Asheville would outscore Harvard, 21-20, in the fourth quarter, but it would not be enough with the Crimson collecting the 17-point win.
QUOTABLES
"Today was a well-played game in a lot of areas. We certainly didn't have the hot hand, but we had some fighters getting the offensive rebound on almost half of our misses. We just couldn't capitalize. We had momentum in the third quarter when we let Harvard do what they do best, which is hit transition threes and get second shots. I was proud of our girls being able to make adjustments when we had some minor injuries as well. We will work on Fordham tonight and get ready for another battle tomorrow." – Brenda Mock Kirkpatrick
