Solid Bench Production Not Enough for Bulldogs in Loss to Appalachian State

BOONE, N.C. – The two teams would play close for the majority of the first half, but Appalachian State would pull away from UNC Asheville down the stretch to pick up an 81-51 win over the Bulldogs at the Holmes Center on Wednesday, Dec. 21.
UNC Asheville would own an 11-10 lead with 46 seconds left in the first quarter, but Appalachian State would hit a three-pointer with just seconds remaining to take a narrow two-point lead at 13-11 at the conclusion of the inaugural quarter of action.
The Mountaineers would hold the lead the rest of the way.
Junior center Bronaza Fitzgerald led the Bulldogs in their loss with 12 points and five rebounds. She also had two blocks.
Appalachian State's Q Murray was the top scorer in the game with 22 points.
The Bulldogs closed out the game shooting 27.3 percent (15-of-55) as a team, while Appalachian State shot 43.9 percent (29-of-66) as a team.
BULLDOG BITES
DEFENSE INTO OFFENSE: Despite the loss, as always the Bulldog defense was able to turn defense into offense with Appalachian State committing 17 turnovers and Asheville scoring 22 points off of those turnovers.
SIGNIFICANT IMPACT OFF THE BENCH: The Bulldogs led by Fitzgerald's 12 points collected over half of their points in the contest off the bench. In total, 26 of Asheville's 51 points in the game came from bench production.

UNC Asheville will travel to the Bronx to play in the 10th Annual Fordham Holiday Classic on Thursday, Dec. 29, and Friday, Dec. 30. The Bulldogs will commence things in the tournament by facing off against Harvard at 2:30 p.m. on Thursday, Dec. 29, at Rose Hill Gym.
