Bulldogs Pick Up Impressive Home Win Over Wofford

12.10.2016 | Women's Basketball

ASHEVILLE, N.C. - A dominating second quarter performance allowed the UNC Asheville women's basketball team to pick up a convincing 84-65 win over Wofford on Saturday at Kimmel Arena.

The Bulldogs (5-2) and Terriers (5-4) battled back and forth in the first half in general with seven lead changes.

In the second quarter though the Bulldogs would take the game over as mentioned by outscoring the Terriers, 25-9, in the quarter to own a 43-29 lead at the halftime break.

That second quarter would pretty much prove to be all that the Bulldogs needed to pull away for the 19-point win.

Four Bulldogs ended their efforts in double figures with Khaila Webb posting 22 points on 10-of-13 shooting.

Chatori Major finished her day with 17 points and four rebounds, while Ja'Da Brayboy was 5-of-5 from the field in finishing her day with 15 points. Tianna Knuckles scored 11 in the win over the Terriers.

Wofford was led in its loss by Chloe Wanink's 18 points and seven rebounds.

In the win, the Bulldogs shot 51.7 percent (30-of-58) as a team. Asheville connected on 44.4 percent (8-of-18) of its three-point attempts.

BULLDOG BITES

FLIRTING WITH HISTORY: Webb just missed on a triple-double in the game as she also had eight rebounds and six assists to go along with her 22 points.

IT'S AN HONOR: Prior to the win over Wofford, Knuckles was honored for joining the prestigious 1,000-point club at UNC Asheville. One of only 105 in Big South Women's Basketball history to surpass 1,000 points, Knuckles passed the 1,000-point mark in the Bulldog win over Western Carolina on Friday, Nov. 18, at Kimmel Arena. The senior guard out of Wendell, N.C. now has 1,050 career points.

DEFENSIVE: In the win over Wofford, Asheville forced the Terriers into 10 turnovers with the Bulldogs scoring 17 points off the 10 miscues.

Home Sweet Home: Kimmel Arena is one of the toughest places to play in all of women's college basketball. This year the Bulldogs are already 4-0 at home with wins over Western Carolina, Tennessee Tech, Warren Wilson and Wofford. The strong 4-0 start at home this season follows up a performance last year where the Bulldogs were 16-2 at Kimmel Arena.

QUOTABLES

"I was extremely proud of our execution on offense today and our commitment to applying the growth we saw in practice this week to the game today. Wofford shot the ball extremely well and they were going to make us beat them. They made few mistakes, but our resilience and determination to stick to our gameplan was the factor in today's game. Khalia Webb came to play and led the way to a team effort on both ends to perform at the level we know were capable of. There's work to be done. We don't like it when anyone shoots 50 percent against us, so credit Wofford. But high-level teams are able to take punches and respond. That's who we want to be. We hope to build on this effort and also to take care of things in the classroom this week as well. Our girls are in the middle of exam week right now, so this shows maturity to be able get work done today in the midst of a rigorous academic schedule - Brenda Mock Kirkpatrick
