ASHEVILLE, N.C. – The UNC Asheville women's volleyball team won, 3-1, over the Winthrop Eagles on Saturday afternoon at the Winthrop Coliseum.
The Eagles took the first set 25-13, and the Bulldogs took the second set 25-19. Using the momentum they had, the Bulldogs battled closely, but were able to rally, and won the third set 25-22.
The Bulldogs closed the match, 25-19, for a victory in four sets.
NOTABLES
-The Bulldog offense was led by Cara Guthrie with 17 kills, Madison Vaughn with 9 and Shelby Erickson with 9.
-Shelby Erickson had 2 aces in the match.
- The defense held strong with Madison Vaughn making 6 blocks, Julia Loveday with 5, and Shelby Erickson with 5.
QUOTABLES
"The match was fantastic! Our team was able to cope with the pressure of playing a decisive match, a must win situation against an opponent who was on a 6 match winning streak and playing at home. We were able to put pressure on Winthrop and make some great defensive plays. I'm proud of our team for maintaining composure and focus in the match and for believing in themselves above all. They earned this tournament berth and we will go to Liberty with a hunger for more. I want to thank all our coaches for cheering us on, our team behind the team for all the work they do for us throughout the year and all who follow us throughout the year. The Bulldogs finished 6th in the standings of the Big South Conference. With this win over Winthrop, Asheville has the tiebreak, and will move on to the Big South Conference Tournament as the No. 6 seed. Dates and times will be announced at a later date.
