ASHEVILLE, N.C. – The UNC Asheville men's basketball team begins their regular season with a trip to Richmond, Va. to face the VCU Rams this Friday, November 11 at the Siegel Center beginning at 7:00 p.m.
The Bulldogs are coming off a 22-12 season, a Big South Conference Tournament Championship (the third in the last six seasons), and a trip to the NCAA Tournament where they fell to eventual national champions, Villanova.
Asheville has now finished with 10 conference wins in nine straight seasons, something no other team in the Big South has accomplished. Asheville was voted to finish 3rd by the Big South Conference and had two Big South Preseason Second All-Conference Team players named, Kevin Vannatta and Ahmad Thomas.
NOTABLES
Preparing for the Season: Asheville hosted Montreat this past Saturday night in an exhibition game in which they won 101-59. The Bulldogs showed that balanced scoring will play a key role in success again this season, with four players scoring double digits Saturday night.
Battling the Atlantic 10: This will be the second meeting between the two teams. The last time they met was over 40 years ago, in which VCU came out on top 111-70 on February 4, 1974. The last time the Bulldogs matched up with an A10 school was in Nick McDevitt's first season as head coach, a loss to Rhode Island in 2013 in the Preseason NIT.
Scouting VCU: The Rams have a team lead by six seniors and two juniors. VCU finished the 2015-16 season with a 25-11 overall record, losing to Oklahoma in the second round of the NCAA Tournament, 85-81.
Road Openers: Asheville has struggled in road openers over the past few seasons with their last road opener victory coming in 2010 over Auburn. The Bulldogs have faced tough competition in these openers however, such as NC State, Kentucky, Wake Forest, and Tennessee.
New Faces: The Bulldogs' squad has eight newcomers on the roster. Youth will be served heavily as six of the new faces are freshman, while the other two are transfers.
QUOTABLES
"This will be a tough test for our basketball team as we start the 2016-17 season. VCU is a very good team and a program that has a rich tradition. The Seigel Center is always a hostile environment, but we are looking forward to the challenge tomorrow night."—Head Coach Nick McDevitt
