ASHEVILLE, N.C. – Playing their fifth game in seven days, the UNC Asheville baseball team fell at home to the visiting Wofford Terriers by a 15-8 score on Wednesday night.

The Bulldogs (16-18) saw Wofford jump out to a 7-4 lead after the opening three innings, as the Terriers (25-11) added two runs in the sixth and ninth, as well as a three-run seventh frame.

Freshman Tyler Hughes was saddled with the loss, allowing five runs in two innings of work. It was a true Johnny Wholestaff game, with five Bulldog relievers combining to allow 10 runs on 11 hits over the final seven innings of work.

Three Asheville batters each finished with two hits in the loss – Joe Tietjen, Hunter Bryant and and Joe Zayatz – with Bryant and Zayatz each collecting two RBI. Zayatz notched a double to his stat line while Bryant belted his seventh home run of the season for the Bulldogs' opening run in the bottom of the second inning.

Up 2-1, Wofford plated five runs in the third inning as seven batters went to the plate. Asheville answered with three runs of their own in the bottom of the frame via Bryant's RBI sacrifice fly and an RBI single from Zayatz to cut the deficit to 7-4.

After a Terrier run in the top of the fourth, the Bulldogs pulled within two runs in the bottom of the fourth on Erik Connolly's RBI single and a wild pitch that brought in a second run. Asheville could get no closer, however, as Wofford scored the game's next five runs to pull away for good.

The Bulldogs jump back into Big South Conference play this weekend on the road against Presbyterian College. Friday night's opening game begins at 3 p.m., Saturday is scheduled for a 2 p.m. start and Sunday's finale is a 1 p.m. first pitch.
