Bulldogs Victim to Big Inning in Saturday Loss

CLINTON, S.C. – The UNC Asheville baseball team fell victim to a pair of three run innings Saturday, falling 7-6 to host Presbyterian College in Big South Conference play.
The Bulldogs (16-20, 3-8 Big South Conference) 6-4 heading into the sixth inning, but saw the Blue Hose (20-15, 3-8 BSC) score three runs in the bottom of the sixth to come back and take the lead for good.
Asheville starter Joe Zayatz (1-5) was saddled with the loss, allowing seven runs (five earned) in 5 2/3 innings.
Tommy Houmard led the offense with a 3-for-4 afternoon, driving in a pair of RBI, while Michael Kelly, Sean Grebeck and Riley Smith all collected one RBI each.
Kelly got the scoring going with his solo homer in the top of the first inning, answered by PC's RBI single in the third inning to tie things up.
The Bulldogs plated a pair of runs in the top of the fourth inning, taking the lead on Smith's RBI sacrifice fly before adding to the advantage with Pete Guy's RBI double into left-center field. Presbyterian responded with a three-run bottom of the fourth, highlighted by a solo homer, sacrifice fly RBI and a run via a throwing error.
Continuing to go back and forth, Asheville climbed back to re-take the lead with three runs of their own in the top of the fifth on a pair of big hits. Houmard delivered a two-run double down the right field line before Grebeck added his RBI single to give the Bulldogs the 6-4 advantage.
Presbyterian used two doubles, the first bringing home one run and the second driving in two runs, to plate three runs in the bottom of the sixth inning and take the lead for good, holding on over the last three innings.
Tomorrow's series finale is set for a 1 p.m. first pitch in Clinton.
