Bulldogs Fall to LaSalle in Sunday Series Finale

ASHEVILLE, N.C. – A five-run seventh inning allowed visiting LaSalle to pull away from the UNC Asheville baseball team and grab a 14-3 win in the series finale on Sunday afternoon.
The Bulldogs (6-8) plated three runs in the bottom of the fourth inning to pull to within one run, but saw LaSalle (6-7) score 10 runs in their final three at-bats as part of a 21-hit afternoon.
Lucas Owens finished with two of Asheville's six total hits, while Justin Woods and Eric Connolly each drove home a run.
Starter Joe Zayatz was saddled with his fourth loss of the season after racking up seven strikeouts and allowing four runs on 10 hits in his six inning outing.
LaSalle used a solo home run in the top of the first inning to jump ahead before plating a pair of runs in the second inning via a two-run single from Ethan Springston. The visitors pushed the lead to four runs in the top of the fourth on Springston's RBI triple.
Asheville sent seven batters to the plate in the bottom of the fourth to plate three runs, highlighted by Kyle Towles' leadoff single before later scoring via a wild pitch, while Woods and Connolly both drove home a run with their sacrifice flies.
The Bulldogs were unable to mount any scoring opportunities the rest of the afternoon, instead seeing LaSalle extend the lead with a five-run seventh inning, a pair of runs in the eighth and three runs in the ninth frame.
Asheville has a midweek pair of games coming up against Furman, hosting the Paladins on Tuesday before traveling to Greenville, S.C. on Wednesday. Tuesday afternoon's game at Greenwood Field is slated for a 3:00 p.m. first pitch.
