Baseball Plays Three This Weekend in Spartanburg

Baseball Falls to Coastal Carolina 12-4

ASHEVILLE, N.C. – Coastal Carolina hit three home runs and banged out 15 hits as the Chanticleers downed UNC Asheville 12-4 in Big South Conference baseball action at Greenwood Field Friday evening.

 

The Chanticleers (15-6, 1-0 BSC) won their sixth straight game, while the Bulldogs (10-11, 1-3 BSC) had their two-game winning streak snapped.

 

CCU pitching limited Asheville to just four hits in the game. Chanticleer starter Alex Cunningham (4-0) allowed just one hit in five innings of work. He struck out six and walked three.

 

Tommy Houmard had a triple for the Blue & White and scored a run. Kyle Towles added a run-scoring double and Joe Zayatz delivered an RBI-single.

 

Al Molina led the Chanticleers at the plan with two doubles, three RBI's and two run scored. Anthony Marks went 3-for-6 with an RBI. CCU picked up home runs from Michael Paez, Seth Lancaster and Zach Remillard.

 

Houmard opened the first inning for Asheville with a triple down the right-field line.  But Cunningham didn't allow the Bulldogs an early run as he got a fly-out and two strikeouts to keep the game scoreless.

 

CCU scored three times in the second to take the lead for good. Chadwick drove in the first run of the game on a sacrifice fly, followed by a RBI-double from Molina. Marks added an RBI-single to put the visitors in front, 3-0.

 

Molina delivered another RBI-double in the fourth to push the lead to 4-0. Paez hit a two-run homer to push the lead to 6-0.

 

CCU scored four mores in the fifth to lead 10-0. The Chants added solo homers from Lancaster and Remillard to complete their scoring.

 

Asheville got on the board with three runs in the sixth. Towles RBI-double played the Dogs first run of the game. Pete Guy delivered a sacrifice fly, followed by a run-scoring single from Zayatz.

 

The Bulldogs added a run in the ninth on Derek Smith's sacrifice fly.

 

The teams will play the second of their three-game series on Saturday starting at 3 p.m.
