CSU Downs Baseball on Saturday 10-0/Teams Play Again on Sunday

ASHEVILLE, N.C. – Andrew Widell went 4-for-4 with two doubles and three runs driven in as Charleston Southern opened Big South Conference play with a 10-0 victory over homestanding UNC Asheville Saturday afternoon.
The Bulldogs (8-9, 0-1 BSC) were held to four hits by three CSU pitchers. CSU starter Andrew Tomasovich (4-1) pitched the first six innings and gave up all four Asheville hits. He struck out five and walked three. Relievers' Dylan Lee and Cody Smith pitched the final three innings and did not give up a hit.
Chase Shelton added three hits, two runs and two RBIs for the visitors. Nate Blanchard chipped in two hits and two runs batted in for the Bucs.
Asheville picked up a double from Tommy Houmard and Kyle Towles in Saturday's contest.
CSU (9-6, 1-0 BSC) scored twice in the fourth to get all the runs it need to take a 2-0 lead. Widell singled, went to third on a single from Cole Murphy. He then scored on a wild pitch. Shelton drove Murphy in with a run-scoring single.
The Bucs added three runs in sixth to lead 5-0. Widell's RBI-double plated the first run of the frame. Shelton followed with another run-scoring single. Sam Knight's infield single plated the final run of the inning.
CSU broke it open in the eighth inning with five runs. Widell had a two-run double, while Blanchard added a two-run single.
The teams play the second game of their three-game series Sunday afternoon at 1 p.m. Sunday's game will broadcast on the Big South Network.
