LEXINGTON, S.C. – The UNC Asheville baseball team surrendered a pair of four-run innings which led to a 10-3 loss to Canisius College on Friday evening at the Lexington Sports Complex.

Asheville (2-5) took a 3-1 lead into the fifth inning when Canisius (5-3) freshman reliever J.P. Stevenson entered the game and threw four innings of shutout baseball, while striking out seven and scattering three hits to earn his first win of the season.

“It was a good game for about five innings or so,” said head coach Scott Friedholm.  “Then we hit a couple of guys and gave them a couple of extra base runners and Canisius, being a very good team, took advantage of that and put runs on the board when they had the opportunity.  The beauty of baseball is we have a quick turnaround and get to go play baseball tomorrow at 10:00 a.m.”

Corey Randall (1-2) took the loss for Asheville throwing 4.2 innings and allowing five runs on six hits and striking out four batters.  Canisius starter Josh Shepley threw four innings and was on the hook for the loss when he exited the game after the Bulldogs scored two runs in the third inning, on back-to-back RBI hits from Kyle Towles and Joe Zayatz, and one run in the fourth inning.

Trailing 3-1, the Griffs grabbed the lead in the fifth inning.  Adam Tricarico had the big hit of the inning with a two-run homerun to left field.  Canisius added two more runs in the inning, with Jesse Puscheck doubling to right field to drive in a run and eventually scoring later in the inning.

In the seventh, after a walk, an error and a single Canisius catcher Jack Massa hit a grand slam to break the game open.

Zayatz led the way at the plate for the Blue & White going 2-for-4 with a double and an RBI.  Towles added to the offense going 1-for-3 at the plate with an RBI single, a stolen base and a run scored.

The Bulldogs will return to action tomorrow morning when they face New Jersey Institute of Technology at 10:00 a.m. in the first game of a double-header.  Asheville will face Morehead State in the second game, schedule for 1:30 p.m. at Riley Park in Sumter, S.C.
