ASHEVILLE, N.C. – Sophomore guard Andrew Rowsey scored a season-high 39 points and tied a school-record with eight 3-pointers, but High Point had four players in double figures as the Panthers recorded a 75-71 Big South Conference victory over UNC Asheville Thursday night at Kimmel Arena.
The win by High Point (22-7, 13-4 BSC) clinches at least a tie for the Big South regular-season title. HPU was led by John Brown with 19 points and 10 rebounds. Brian Richardson added 11 points, while Adam Weary and Lorenzo Cugini finished with 10 points each.
The Panthers dominated the backboards and had a 46-27 rebounding advantage. High Point outscored the Bulldogs in second-chance points, 19-6. Devante Wallace also had 10 rebounds for the visitors.
Kevin Vannatta chipped in 10 points for the Bulldogs. Corey Littlejohn had a season-high five assists for the Blue & White.
The Panthers led for most of the game but couldn't put the Bulldogs away thanks to the brilliance of Rowsey. The sophomore guard was 13-of-27 from the field, 8-of-14 from beyond the arc and was a perfect 5-of-5 from the free throw line. He has now made 30 straight free throws.
High Point led 69-58 on a Wallace jumper with 5:35 mark. Asheville roared back on the strength of its three-point shooting. Rowsey hit two straight treys and Vannatta's trey narrowed the lead to 69-67.
But the Bulldogs could get no closer as the Panthers got huge tap-ins from Brown and Cugini down the stretch and hit just enough free throws down the stretch.
UNC Asheville finishes the regular season at Liberty Saturday afternoon at 3 p.m.
