ASHEVILLE, N.C. – The UNC Asheville men's soccer team took a big step in solidifying a spot in the 2015 Big South Championships with a 4-1 Wednesday night victory over Presbyterian. The Bulldogs, who entered the night in ninth place in the standings and just outside the tournament field, jumped over Liberty, who lost to Campbell 2-1 on Wednesday.

THE TURNING POINT

After Presbyterian took the lead in the 16th minute, Asheville responded with a pair of goals late in the first half to seize control and earn the important victory after adding two goals in the second 45 minutes.

NOTABLES

-Presbyterian took the lead in the 16th minute on what was just their fifth goal of the season.

-Asheville responded with a pair of goals in the 29th and 34th minute. Zach Joens' ninth goal of the season knotted the score before Brendan O'Dowd put the Bulldogs in the lead for good. Both goals were assisted by Joe LaCasto.

-A pair of seniors scored their first collegiate goals in the second half, beginning with Cole Schwietering's goal in the 62nd minute before Andrew Sotak's goal in the 81st minute.

-The Bulldogs finished with a 24-9 shot advantage in the win and recorded eight corner kicks.

QUOTABLES

“Very pleased with the result. I thought it was one of our better 90 minute performances. Obviously giving up the early goal wasn't ideal, but full credit to Presbyterian. They came in and fought hard and were very physical. I am really pleased with the way we attacked the goal and some of the chances we created. Moving forward, I'm really excited to celebrate our seniors on Saturday against Campbell and then figure out, as the dust settles Saturday night, where the next step in our season will be in competing for a Big South Championship. The goal is to give ourselves a chance and we have done that.” – head coach Mathes Mennell

UP NEXT

-Following tonight's win, the Bulldogs close the regular season with a 7:00 p.m. Saturday contest against Campbell on Senior Night.
