ASHEVILLE, N.C. – Pressing forward in Big South Conference play, the UNC Asheville women's soccer team takes to the road for a Saturday matinee matchup at Coastal Carolina. Kickoff from the CCU Soccer Stadium is set for 3 p.m. ET and the game will be available live on the Big South Network.
The Bulldogs will look to get back on track after seeing their two-game conference win streak snapped in a 3-0 home loss to High Point Wednesday night. Asheville is currently positioned fourth in the Big South standings with 12 points (4-3-0) while Coastal Carolina ranks one spot higher with 13 points (4-1-1). Coastal suffered its first defeat in conference play in its last time out, losing 1-0 to Campbell on Wednesday.
NOTABLES
-Sophomore Caroline Houser is on pace to set a new school record for assists in a season as her current total of nine helpers is tied for most in a single season with Kaitlyn Eckert (2012). The 2014 Big South Conference Freshman of the Year has 13 career assists, tied for fifth-most in school history.
-The Bulldogs have shown to possess one of the most dynamic offenses in the Big South Conference, pacing the conference in goals (29) and points (84) while also ranking second in shots (238, 17.0 per game) and assists (26, 1.86 per game). The offensive attack has been sparked by a pair of underclassmen, as freshman Justine James' six goals lead the team while sophomore Caroline Houser's 19 points (5 G, 9 A) are tops on the team.
-Asheville has posted an impressive 6-1 (.857) record in games decided by one goal.
- Freshman goalkeeper Lily Brown was named the Big South Conference Defensive Player of the Week on Oct. 12, her first career award. The honor marked the second weekly award for Asheville this season after junior Paige Trent was named the conference's Attacking Player of the Week on Aug. 24. Brown became the first Bulldog to win Defensive Player of the Week honors since the award's inception in 2010. She is the fourth player under fifth-year head coach Michelle Demko to receive a weekly award and the 28th Bulldog since 1993 to garner weekly conference accolades. During wins over Charleston Southern (Oct. 7) and Radford (Oct. 10), Brown tallied 15 saves while allowing just a single goal in 180 minutes played.
-Asheville is 1-4-0 in its last five meetings against Coastal. In the most recent matchup, the Bulldogs defeated the Chanticleers 1-0 on Oct. 18, 2014, to snap an eight-game losing streak in the series.
QUOTABLES
“This will be a great matchup. Coastal has played very consistent soccer and gotten some good results. We want opportunities to match up against teams that will force us to compete in areas that will strengthen our players and program. These areas that will be critical for success on Saturday are communication, discipline and focus. We are working to be a team that consistently stays at the top of the table so this is a great opportunity for us to play against one of those teams and measure ourselves in all components on the field.” - Fifth-year head Coach Michelle Demko
UP NEXT
-The Bulldogs conclude their two-game road trip on Wednesday, Oct. 21, traveling to Orangeburg, S.C., to take on non-conference opponent South Carolina State.
