BOILING SPRINGS, N.C. – The UNC Asheville men's soccer team fell into a three goal deficit on Wednesday night, eventually dropping a 3-1 decision at Gardner-Webb in Big South Conference action.

THE TURNING POINT

Gardner-Webb's Ali Al-Gashamy scored a pair of goals in the first half – at the 12and 30 minute marks – to push the hosts out in front.

NOTABLES

-Gardner-Webb outshot Asheville 14-10 overall, but both teams struggled to get shots on net. Gardner-Webb put four shots on goal, while the Bulldogs finished with just two shots on goal.

-Zach Joens scored Asheville's lone goal in the 57th minute, assisted by Andrew Sotak and Andrew Lawrence. The goal was Joens' fifth of the season but his first in the last seven games.

-Joens (4 shots) and A.J. Iiames (2 shots) were the only Bulldogs with multiple shot attempts.

-With the loss, the last Asheville victory over Gardner-Webb in Boiling Springs remains a 2-0 victory in September of the 2004 season.

QUOTABLES

“Gardner-Webb was better than us in the first half, and obviously giving away two goals on two set pieces is not an ideal way to start a match. I thought we were better in the second half, but overall I am a little disappointed because we had an opportunity to play well for 90 minutes and we only played well for half of that. The Big South Conference is a very competitive enterprise, and we have another great opportunity to play against a Winthrop team that is on a very good run and an opportunity to see how we respond to this setback.” - Head Coach Mathes Mennell

UP NEXT

-Following tonight's loss, the Bulldogs stay on the road for matches at Winthrop (Saturday) and William & Mary (Oct. 20) before returning home to host Liberty on October 24.
