ASHEVILLE, N.C. – High Point placed three players in double figures as the Panthers downed UNC Asheville 67-50 in Big South Conference women's basketball action Tuesday night at Kimmel Arena.

 

The victory was the Panthers (11-6, 7-1 BSC) fourth straight, while the Bulldogs (3-13, 2-5 BSC) lost for the seventh straight time.

Asheville was led by sophomore center KJ Weaver with 12 points and nine rebounds. Senior guard Brittany Gwyn added 11 points and seven rebounds. Jeannie Buckner pulled down eight rebounds for the Blue & White.

 

High Point was led by Kaylah Keys with 16 points. Stacia Robertson added 14 points, four blocked shots and three steals. DeAnneisha Jackson chipped in 13 points, seven rebounds and four blocks.

 

Asheville hurt itself on offense as the Bulldogs shot just 32.8 percent (19-of-58) from the field and made 20 turnovers during. The home team out-rebounded the Panthers, 43-38.

 

High Point forged a 30-24 halftime lead that saw seven lead changes and had six ties. Jackson and Robertson combined for 12 points in the opening half. Weaver helped keep the Bulldogs close with six points.

 

The visitors took control of the game early in the second half. Paige Love's lay-up at the 18-minute mark cut High Point's lead to 33-30. But the Panthers went on a 10-2 run over the next five minutes to take a 43-32 lead on a Robertson lay-up.

 

The Bulldogs countered with four quick points to close to 43-36. However, High Point countered with a 10-2 run to push the margin to 53-38.  Asheville would never get any close as the Panthers defeated the Bulldogs for the 13th straight time.

 

Asheville shot just 29 percent (9-of-31) from the field in the second half. High Point was a little better at 42 percent (10-of-24).  The Bulldogs had 11 turnovers in the second half which led to 10 Panther points. HPU did a great job from the free throw line as it went 16-of-19.

 

UNC Asheville travels to Big South Conference foe Gardner-Webb Saturday at 2 p.m.
