Volleyball Falls To #7 Purdue At Kennesaw Invitational

KENNESAW, Ga. – The UNC Asheville volleyball team dropped their opening match at the 2014 Kennesaw State Invitational on Friday evening, falling to #7 Purdue in straight sets.


With the victory the nationally ranked Boilermakers improve to 4-0 while the young Bulldog squad falls to 0-4.


“This was a tough match against one of the best teams in the nation,” said Asheville head coach Frederico Santos. “We didn't get the result we wanted but we did some good things that we can hopefully build on.”


Sophomore Shelby Erickson led the way for the Blue & White with five kills with fellow sophomore Madison Vaughn finishing the match with four. Junior outside hitter Christine Lakatos tallied a team-best 10 digs defensively while freshman Diana Enriquez posted a team-high three blocks.


The Boilermakers were led by Faye Adelaja, who tallied a match-high eight kills. Azariah Stahl tallied seven kills for Purdue, with setter Val Nichol earning 23 assists directing the Boilermaker attack.


Purdue recorded 10 service aces in the match, with Annie Drews tallying a match-best four aces.


The first set saw the Boilermakers earn a 25-13 decision, only to see the Bulldogs fight back in the second to a 25-20 finish. Purdue would wrap up the match with a 25-12 victory in the third.


Asheville will take on host Kennesaw State at noon on Saturday before taking on regional rival Elon at 5 p.m. to close out the event.
