ASHEVILLE, N.C. – UNC Asheville had three players record 11 kills each as the Bulldogs ended a seven-game losing streak with a hard-fought 3-1 home victory over Wofford Tuesday night at Justice Center. Asheville won the match, 25-15, 23-25, 25-20, 25-22.
The Bulldogs (3-12) were led by Catherine Fischer, Christine Lakatos and Shelby Erickson with 11 kills each. Junior setter Katie Davis added 33 assists, 16 digs and five blocks. Lakatos enjoyed a double-double with 14 digs. She also added three service aces.
Wofford (6-9) was led by Bella Santoro with 12 kills and 13 digs. Danni Densford and Taylor Baird finished with 11 kills each. Jessica Graham had a game-high 18 digs. The Terriers hurt themselves throughout the match with costly errors. Wofford had 40 hitting errors and 13 service errors, including three late in the fourth set that helped the Bulldogs secure the win.
“I'm really proud of our team for this victory,” stated Bulldog coach Frederico Santos. “We've been struggling, and we're a young team. But tonight we stepped up and got the job done against a fine Wofford team. We played well in all facets of the game and got key points when we had to have those points. This is a big win for us and hopefully we can build on this victory as go into Big South Conference play.”
The home team dominated the opening set. Wofford had nine attack errors and five service errors as Asheville led the entire set. The Bulldogs got four kills from Liatos to win 25-14 in the first game.
In the second set, Asheville led for most of the way and built a 19-13 lead only to see Woodford rally. The Terriers got its hitting attack going. Wofford had 17 kills in the second set, four from Santoro as it evened the match at 1-1 with a 25-23 victory.
The Bulldogs led most of the third set to win 25-20. Asheville held off several Woodford rallies to go up 2-1. Fischer sparked the Blue & White with four kills in the set. Madison Vaughn and Davis teamed up for three blocks in the game.
Asheville built a lead in the fourth set and held off several Wofford rallies. The Bulldogs led 20-15 only to commit three straight hitting errors to allow the Terriers to close to 20-18. Asheville and Wofford traded points, but the Terriers were hurt with three service errors that blunted their momentum. Lakatos gave Asheville its first win at home in 2014 with a kill after a long rally.
UNC Asheville opens Big South Conference play this Friday evening when the Bulldogs travel to Gardner-Webb to face the Runnin' Bulldogs at 7 p.m.
