ASHEVILLE, N.C. – Belmont scored twice early in the second half as the Bruins edged UNC Asheville 2-1 in women's soccer action Sunday afternoon at Greenwood Field.

 

Belmont (3-2-2) trailed 1-0 at halftime but got goals from Taylor Smith and Allie Hicks to put the visitors in front for good.

 

The Bulldogs (4-3-0) were playing the game a little short-handed with three starters out due to injuries. Belmont enjoyed a 22-8 edge in shots. Asheville goalkeeper Heather Muller made five saves for the Blue & White.

 

The Bruins tied the match at 50:40.  Asheville was given a Yellow Card, and Belmont enjoyed a free kick. Alison Alcott sent a perfect ball into the Bulldog goal area that Smith was able to head into the far left corner to knot the game at 1-1.

 

In the 55th minute, Sydney Omweg sent a pass to Hicks who was wide open in front of the Asheville goal. She tucked the ball into the back of the net for a 2-1 Bruin lead.

 

Belmont controlled play much of the way as it out-shot Asheville, 11-4 in the second half. The Bulldogs did have two chances in the second half. Miller was stopped on a breakaway when Belmont goalkeeper Megan Byrd dove and knocked the ball away from her at the last minute.

 

Amanda Dailor had a shot with 30 seconds left on a direct that sailed wide.

 

Belmont controlled much of the first half as it out-shot the Bulldogs, 11-5. However, Asheville scored the only goal of the half.

 

On a corner kick midway through the opening stanza, Caroline Houser corner kick bounced through the arms of Belmont goalkeeper Megan Byrd. Freshman Brooke Miller was there to poke the ball into the goal for her first goal of the season and her career. Miller's goal came at 20:10.

 

The Bulldogs look they had scored again five minutes later but Paige Trent's goal was wiped out due to an off-sides call.

 

The Bruins best opportunity to score came with 10 minutes left in the first half as Taylor Smith was alone in front of the goal but her shot was stopped by Muller before going into the left corner.

 

UNC Asheville travels to Alabama A&M next Sunday (Sept. 21) for its next match.  The Bulldogs next home match will be their Big South Conference opener when they entertain Campbell on Sept. 24 starting at 5 p.m.
