Volleyball Falls to Harvard 3-0 in Weekend Finale

ATHENS, Ga. – The UNC Asheville volleyball team battled a tough Harvard squad throughout, but fell in three sets, Saturday afternoon at the Ramsey Center on the campus of the University of Georgia.
The Bulldogs fall to 2-8 on the year, while Harvard improves to 4-2. The match was the final match at the Benson Hospitality Invitational.
Trailing 16-11 in the opening set, a Diana Enriquez kill sparked a 7-2 spurt which tied the score at 18-18. Asheville and Harvard traded four separate 2-0 runs, sending the score to 24-24. Harvard hung on to win the set following back-to-back kills by Caroline Walters. Christine Lakatos and Cameron Pryor paced the Bulldogs with four kills apiece in the opening set.
Harvard opened up a 20-10 lead in the second set before the Bulldogs rattled off an 8-3 run powered by the defense to close to 23-18. Katie Creger, Madison Vaughn, Shelby Erickson and Lakatos each recorded a block during the stretch. The Crimson overcome the run and went on to win the set 25-20.
Asheville needed another large run to overcome a deficit in the third set. After falling behind 22-18, the Bulldogs mounted a 5-0 run to take a 23-22 lead. Creger started the run with a kill and capped it off when she teamed up with Catherine Fischer to send back a Harvard attack. It would prove to not be enough to overcome the Crimson, after Harvard rallied to score four of the next five points to win the set 26-24.
Junior Christine Lakatos led the Bulldogs offensively with 11 kills, while freshman Cameron Pryor added seven kills. Freshman Kristen Clay and sophomore Madison Vaughn led Asheville defensively with nine digs and three blocks, respectively.
Caroline Walters (12) and Kathleen Wallace (10) each registered double digit kills for the Crimson, while Corinne Bain handed out 23 assists. Sindhu Vegesena handled the defensive responsibilities with a team-high 14 digs.
Asheville returns home to face Western Carolina in the home opener at 7:00 p.m. on Tuesday, September 16.
