RICHMOND, Ky. – The UNC Asheville women's soccer team scored two early goals and made that stand up to record a 2-1 non-conference road victory over Eastern Kentucky Friday afternoon.
"I am proud of this team for a hard fought win on the road. We scored two great goals fairly early on the game by creating numbers up opportunities," stated Asheville coach Michelle Demko. "Heather (Muller) came up big today to keep us in the lead. She had great presence and leadership today. We had a good game plan this week. I credit these players who believed in that plan and went out today and fought hard for this victory."
The Bulldogs (4-2-0) tallied two goals in a two-minute span to build a 2-0 lead. Amanda Dailor scored her third goal of the season when she connected on a free kick at the 10:46 mark. EKU (2-4-0) was called for a foul and Dailor hit a rocket into the upper right corner for a 1-0 Asheville lead.
The Blue & White added to the lead at 12:55 when Kennedy Garrett fed Paige Trent who scored to give the Bulldogs a 2-0 lead.
Asheville would maintain the lead at halftime and would then have to hold off an EKU surge in the second half to record the victory.
The Lady Colonels would out-shoot the Bulldogs 14-3 in the second stanza. EKU's Cassie Smith would get the home team on the board in the 59th minute to cut the lead to 2-1.
But Asheville's defense and goalkeeper Heather Muller would keep the Colonels off the scoreboard the rest of the game. Muller would make 11 saves, eight in the second half.
UNC Asheville is back at Greenwood Field on Sunday afternoon when the Bulldogs host Belmont starting at 1 p.m. Sunday's match is scheduled to be broadcast for free on the Big South Network.
