Women's Tennis Falls to Winthrop

BOILING SPRINGS, N.C. (BigSouthSports.com) – No. 2 seed Winthrop defeated short-handed  No. 7 seed UNC Asheville 4-0, in the quarterfinals of the Big South Conference Women's Tennis Championship Wednesday afternoon at Gardner-Webb University.

 

The Bulldogs played the match without sophomore Ericka Rivero. She was injured in Asheville's match against Presbyerian College on Monday. Rivero was the Bulldogs #2 singles player and teamed up with Zoe Hamel to play #1 doubles.

 

Winthrop's No. 1and No. 2 doubles teams secured the point with a pair of 8-2 victories.  The Eagles' Andressa and Alice Garcia defeated Zoe Hamel and Jill Lewis on court one, while Caitlin Cridland and Ekin Gunaysu stopped Christine Boissevain and Amryn Soldier.

 

In singles play, Andressa Garcia defeated Zoe Hamel 6-1, 6-3 at No. 1.  Alice Garcia topped Amryn Soldier 6-0, 6-0 on court two and Ekin Gunaysu downed Jill Lewis 6-1, 6-3 at No. 5.

 

The Eagles (16-4) move on to Thursday's semifinals where they will face the winner between No. 3 Liberty and No. 6 Radford at 2:30pm. The Bulldogs end their season with a 12-10 overall record.
