Gardner-Webb Edges Men's Tennis 4-3

ASHEVILLE, N.C. – Gardner-Webb won four singles matches to edge UNC Asheville 4-3 in Big South Conference men's tennis action Thursday afternoon in the Bulldogs home finale at the Asheville Racquet Club.
It was the Bulldogs' fifth 4-3 loss of the season as Asheville fell to 7-13 on the year and 1-6 in league action. The Runnin' Bulldogs improved to 12-10 overall and 4-3 in league play. GWU has won five straight matches.
The Bulldogs captured the doubles point as they won matches at #2 and #3 flights. John Schubel and Thomas Panoulas downed Benjamin Kaszas and Pepe Batalla, 8-4 at #2 flight, while Daniel Kripak and Josh Swindler outlasted Brendan Dempsey and Jonathan Walker, 8-6 at #3 flight to give Asheville a 1-0 lead.
Asheville picked up two singles wins in straight sets. Daniel Kripak won at #1 flight by slipping past Nikita Zvererkov, 7-5, 6-4. Josh Swindler won at #6 flight with a 6-4, 6-3 triumph over Pepe Batalla.
The Runnin' Bulldogs won at flight 2-5 to pick up the key league win. Ernest Alberch edged Alex Croker in three sets to seal the win for the visitors at #3 flight. Alberch won 5-7, 7-6, 6-4.
Asheville finishes the regular season at Radford Saturday afternoon at 11 a.m.
