Baseball Falls In 13 Innings To Winthrop

ROCK HILL, S.C. – The UNC Asheville baseball team dropped a 4-3 decision to Big South Conference foe Winthrop on Saturday afternoon, as the Eagles were able to push a run across in the bottom of the 13th inning to pick up the win at the Winthrop Ballpark.
The Bulldogs (8-17, 2-5 BSC) were leading 3-1 heading into the bottom of the ninth before WU (13-14, 5-2 BSC) shortstop Kyle Edwards doubled to right field to tie the game at three runs apiece.
Both teams went scoreless through the bottom of the 13th when TJ Olesczuk drew a walk to start the inning. Rightfielder John Menken then hit a bunt single followed by a throwing error by pitcher Corey Randall that allowed Menken to reach second and Olesczuk to score.
Randall was credited with the loss for the Bulldogs to fall to 0-3 on the season, allowing three runs (two earned) on two hits in four innings of work, striking out seven Eagles in the setback. Senior hurler Ethan Steible got the start for the Bulldogs and pitched eight strong innings, giving up one run on five hits.
The Eagles' Jason Driver picked up the win in relief, allowing three hits in six innings of work while striking out five Bulldogs. Driver improves to 3-2 with the win.
Hunter Bryant, Robert McIntosh and Derek Smith each collected two hits for the Blue & White, with Bryant picking up an RBI.
Menken went 2-for-5 for WU, while Edwards was 1-for-5 with two RBI for the Eagles.
The two teams are slated to play a doubleheader tomorrow beginning at 1 p.m., weather permitting.
