Bulldogs Win Conference Opener, 56-47 Over CSU

ASHEVILLE, N.C. – UNC Asheville placed three players in double figures as the Bulldogs shook off a slow start to record a 56-47 Big South Conference win over visiting Charleston Southern Monday night at Kimmel Arena.
The Bulldogs (2-4, 1-0 BSC) were led by Shonese Jones with 15 points, while Brittany Gwyn added 12 points. KJ Weaver came off the bench to score 11 points and collect seven rebounds.
Charleston Southern (2-3, 0-1 BSC) had Alise Karlson with 10 points. Moniquie Maximilien chipped in eight points and eight rebounds.
The Lady Bucs hit their first five shots of the game and led 12-0 after six minutes as the Bulldogs missed their first seven shots. CSU's Alyssa Mann knocked down a trey at the 10:52 mark to put the visitors in front 17-4.
But the Bulldogs began to rally. Trailing 19-10, Asheville scored the next 12 points over the next five minutes to take a 22-19 lead. Senior guard Tacey Trammell keyed the run with a three-pointer and a lay-up in traffic to cut the lead to 19-17. Gwyn tied the game on a fast-break lay-up. Jones' trey put the Bulldogs on top for the first time at 22-19.
Asheville settled for a 26-23 halftime lead. The Bulldogs forced 12 CSU turnovers resulting in a 14-5 edge in points off turnovers.
The Bulldogs built the lead to 48-37 on a Gwyn lay-up at the 8:39 mark. Charleston Southern crept to 48-43 on two free throws from Karlson at the 3:10 mark. The Lady Bucs had two chances to make it a one-possession game but Asheville's defense denied CSU each time.
Leading 49-44, Gwyn knocked down a three-pointer at the 55-second mark to push the lead to 52-44. CSU could get no closer.
UNC Asheville is back in action this Saturday afternoon when the Bulldogs host Wofford at Kimmel Arena starting at 2 p.m.
