Volleyball Downs Winthrop in 5-Set Thriller

ASHEVILE, N.C. – The UNC Asheville volleyball team scored the final three points of the match as the Bulldogs edged Winthrop in five sets during Big South Conference volleyball action Saturday afternoon at Justice Center. The Bulldogs won the match, 19-25, 25-23, 26-24, 21-25, 15-13.
Asheville (7-21, 3-9 BSC) ended its Justice Center schedule with the dramatic victory after losing a five-set match to Presbyterian College Friday night.
The Bulldogs were led by four players in doubles figures for kills. Shelby Erickson recorded a double-double with 18 kills and 18 digs. Freshman Katie Creger had an outstanding match with 12 kills in 17 attempts. She had no hitting errors and hit .706. Christine Lakatos and Catherine Fischer had 11 kills each for the Blue & White. Lakatos added 13 digs and four blocks. Setter Katie Davis just missed a triple-double with 52 assists, 13 digs and eight assists. Madison Vaughn added eight blocks.
The Lady Eagles (18-11, 8-5 BSC) were led by Nikki Dropst game-high 21 kills and 10 digs. Maria Volstad finished with a game-high 19 digs.
The Bulldogs travel to Liberty Friday afternoon at 3:30 p.m.
